Small jobs welcome

"Can’t say enough about the care and efficiency with which AC Excavation attacked this project. From the initial site visit to preparing a fair and reasonable estimate, and then clearing the underbrush/overgrowth that overwhelmed whatever desirable perennials we wished to keep around, the crew worked skillfully and diligently on a Sunday morning to give us the blank slate we wanted for a garden bed that was unsightly and downright unpleasant. The regrading of the terrain should also help direct rainwater away from the house. Very pleased with the process and the outcome!"

"Max was a pleasure to work with from start to finish, he wasn’t the most expensive or the cheapest but he was definitely the most knowledgeable and experienced. They did a great job and I definitely would hire them again. Money well spent!"

"We hired the Davis remodeling company in June to rid our property of a tremendous amount of yard debris. Larnell was quick to respond and came out promptly for an estimate. He did an amazing job, which was not easy on an extremely hot day! Estimate was reasonable and would definitely recommend! He is also a very nice and professional person!"

"Two young men came to my property, and I walked around and showed them what I wanted done. I was given a quote to have four flower beds weeded and mulched and two medium size bushed trimmed. When they came to do the work, I again walked around and showed them what I needed done. They started the work and about an hour and half into it, knocked on my door and said they would not be completing the rest of the job. They could come back another time and quoted an additional price of $250. When I questioned them later about this, they claimed that the price was not for all the areas I showed them. They also told me that some of the price was for gasoline to travel to the job. No mention was made on the quote about fuel charges. If the job was out of their area and required additional charges, they did not mention it when they quoted the price. For the two flower beds and two bushed they trimmed, they did an adequate job. I would not use them again. I was not happy with my experience."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Yes, trenchers can go through gravel. Gravel is made up of smaller, softer rocks that certain trenchers are able to cut through. Just be sure to use a rock wheel trencher or chain trencher, both of which are made to cut through rocky landscapes and gravel pathways without dulling the teeth or chain.

Excavation is priced in cubic yards, so you’ll need to find the volume of the area in order to calculate costs. Multiply the length, width, and proposed depth of your excavation site, then convert it into yards to get the volume. Multiply this figure by the price per cubic yard.

Most homeowners can measure by hand to get a rough estimate, even if it’s tedious. You may want to pull out a tape measure or use a string to help mark the area.

The best type of soil to build on is a mixture of sand and clay, known as loam soil. Loam soil has the best combination of these soil types to build a foundation on. The clay particles help with water retention, so it won’t erode like sandy soil might, and the sandy particles help with drainage, so you won’t see unsafe soil expansion or have an increased risk of leaks from water sitting against your foundation.

Dumpsters work best on hard, study, and level surfaces made of asphalt, stone, or concrete. If the surface is uneven or too soft, the dumpster could get stuck or tip over when filled. Keep in mind that you must obtain a dumpster permit to keep it on a city street in many areas.

Digging a bush up by the roots is the most natural DIY method for removing a bush stump. Start by identifying the shrub type and revealing its roots. Cut the shrub to its base and loosen the soil, ensuring no utility lines are nearby. Optionally, treat the base with herbicide, then dig around the roots and cut a circle around the shrub using various tools. Dig a trench, cut the base of the root ball, and finally fill the hole to prevent regrowth. This thorough process ensures complete removal without damaging surrounding areas.
