It’s usually worth the investment to pay for a professional to clean your drapes every four to five years. This service will keep your window coverings looking new for much longer. Regular drape cleaning—including biannual vacuuming—is also a great way to reduce allergens in your home, including pet dander, dust, and pollen that can accumulate on the material. Use a combination of blackout methods to truly black out your windows. If you want to eliminate all light from your room, try installing a very dark tinted film and then putting up blackout shades over the entire window. You should dry clean your drapes twice per year: once in the spring and once in the fall. When vacuuming, use a soft brush attachment if you’re working with a heartier material, like cotton or polyester. You can spot-treat stains with a stain remover after vacuuming, and then use a steam cleaner to clean the curtains from top to bottom. You can also bring them to a dry cleaner to have odors, dirt, stains, and allergens removed without washing them.
