You can use a homemade spray to kill fleas on a mattress. To make the spray, combine equal parts water and distilled white vinegar. Spray the mixture on the fleas and all over the mattress.   • Keep a bowl of cider vinegar on your deck or porch.

  • Remove old raccoon scents by thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting underneath porches and decks.

Spiders have lots of scent-sensitive hairs on their legs. Scented oils they aren’t fans of can act as a natural spider repellent to help keep their populations at bay when you rub them around your home’s entry points. Studies suggest mint and chestnut oils are two scents that spiders hate.

Bed bugs are highly sensitive to heat, so a hot blast with a hairdryer can draw them out of hiding. Providing a source of warmth, such as a heating pad or hot-water bottle, can attract and lure them out. Bed bug monitors and traps with pheromones can also be effective.
