No. Rock salt and similar concoctions use sodium chloride. It may be great sprinkled on your roasted potatoes, but plants don’t like it at all and in large amounts it will poison the soil. So while standard salt will dry out a tree, it will kill everything else nearby and cause other problems. The confusion is due to the word “salt” being an old catch-term for any dry chemical mixture.

There are many ways to cut through roots when digging, especially if your trencher doesn’t seem to be removing the roots. First, use a shovel to expose the roots. Then, use gardening shears to clear out smaller roots or a reciprocating saw to remove larger plant roots. If you plan on keeping the plant, avoid cutting any roots over 2 inches thick.

Stumps are difficult to burn due to their dense wood and high moisture content. The dense wood and moisture slow down the burning process, requiring sustained high temperatures over an extended period. Since the wood is damp, this hinders the heat generation needed to keep the fire burning, causing it to frequently go out.

Leaving the tree stump and letting it rot is never a good idea, as this leads to insect infestations and other frustrations. Additionally, decomposing trunks are at risk for diseases that spread out to the remaining plants and trees in the yard, thus ruining your whole outdoor aesthetic. It's usually best to remove the stump at the same time you remove the tree.

It will take you anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours per tree stump to grind and remove the stump from the ground. The larger the size, the longer it will take to remove the stump. Also, keep in mind that rocky soil may require local excavation services to loosen up large boulders before you can begin to remove the tree stump.
