Thompson Family Painting and Remodeling was born some 30 + years ago in Augusta Georgia when I began painting at Medical College of Georgia. I quickly found out that this was not just something I enjoyed, but something I excelled at. I was taught from a very early age to always do my best at whatever I did and never to walk away from a job until it was done right. And this is the philosophy I have followed throughout my career. I moved from Augusta to Tulsa to Los Angeles to Redding California. Always striving to refine my skills and take them a step further. It was in Tulsa that I began remodeling homes and doing room additions. After moving here to Pennsylvania I got the opportunity to work on the magnificent and historic Colerain Mansion in Spruce Creek. A massive home built in 1790 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior. It is currently owned by celebrated author Dorothy Gray (Gurney). And it was at the insistence of Mrs. Gurney that I started Thompson Family Painting Company. And it is my solemn vow to provide the absolute best quality at the best price and leave you more than satisfied. Chalk paint can be applied without sanding first. Keep in mind that while there are a lot of chalk paint color options available, there aren’t as many choices as latex or oil-based paint.

You can also learn how to paint furniture without sanding using a liquid deglosser, sometimes referred to as liquid sandpaper. This can remove any old paint, gloss, or varnish, without the need to manually sand. Apply the deglosser using a cloth, then wait for the chemical to penetrate through the surface. Once it soaks through, you should be able to wipe away the residue with a towel.

Ongoing maintenance of your leather furniture is the only way to prevent it from peeling and cracking. Real leather will peel and crack as it dries out. Leather conditioners are a great way to protect your leather furniture from drying out, and you’ll need to apply it about twice each year. It’s also a good idea to keep abrasive materials away from your leather to prevent cracking and peeling, including belt buckles, shoes, and multi-surface cleaners, especially those that contain alcohol.

Wood stains last anywhere from two to five years, depending on exposure to the elements, your local climate, the type of stain, and the surface it’s on. For instance, vertical surfaces last longer than horizontal surfaces. Some types of woods, like dense hardwoods, will require a recoat yearly, as they are too dense for the stain to absorb. In any event, apply a recoat every 2 to 4 years. As for storage, a can of unopened stain can last up to 5 years, though results may vary.

A good way to determine that a table is not worth refinishing is if it's painted. Often they are painted to cover up flaws with the wood you won't be able to fix. You want a good, solid wood table that just needs a facelift rather than a rickety wood table with a lot of problems.
