"I left a telephone message for Richard and he returned the call within minutes. Even though it was a Saturday and he lived 40 minutes away, he arrived in a couple of hours for this small job and worked in the cold 31 degree weather to remove dangling siding and nail down the remaining strips. He removed the dangling metal piece, which had caused me much concern. He was courteous and professional, and worked with me in solving the problems. He spent a little extra time, as he said, to make sure things were done right. Excellent work, excellent worker."

"Tom was very professional. He was very patient and listened to the litany of projects and questions I had. No project was too small or too big. He arrived on time and I was very satisfied with his work. I would definitely recommend him for a small drywall repair to, building a sturdy 200 gallon aquarium stand, to tearing out entire walls. Hurry up and hire him before I find more projects!!"

Customers say: Quality work

"Tom completed picture-frame trimwork in my dining room. He was very easy to work with and timely with regard to providing the estimate and completing the work. He was courteous, friendly, and knowledgeable about what I wanted to have done. It wasn't a big job in terms of the cost (meaning: he could have told me it wasn't worth his time), but he made it a priority and completed the project quickly, knowing that I was planning a big party in my new home and wanted to have the trimwork complete. I will definitely use Tom again for future work that we will need and would recommend him to others!"

We wanted an addition that blended with the existing architecture so that the new portion looked like it had always been there. The carpentry work that All Phase performed was particularly impressive, showing great attention to detail and skill. Any issues that came up or changes that we requested were promptly addressed so that the project ran smoothly from start to finish. We now have an old home that fits our needs perfectly."

"They rebuilt my deck. Fantastic craftsmanship, professional, diligent workers! They came out for an estimate within hours of my contacting Angie. The bid was in my inbox that night and they started the job a week later. Very reasonable pricing too! We will be working with them again I hope!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

For a professional carpenter, installing a window seat can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on some aspects of the project. Aside from building the seat itself, if they have to remove any cabinets, shelves, or baseboards, that will add time to the project.

When building a house, it is customary to use 16d nails that measure 3 1/2 inches in length to construct the frame. These nails are crucial in providing the necessary support and stability for structural elements like joists and studs, which ensures a sturdy framework.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

Installing a tongue-and-groove wall requires similar techniques to those associated with installing shiplap. However, because of the precision necessary to make each board fit perfectly and the increased material prices, the cost is higher than that of shiplap installations. Expect to spend between $2 and $6 more per square foot for tongue-and-groove walls versus shiplap ones.

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.
