"It's going to cost me thousands of dollars to repair the damage TruGreen has done to my property. There are large sections of my lawn where the grass is now completely gone as the result of improperly applying fertilizer and burning the grass. Before TruGreen my lawn was healthy and pothole free. I am also now dealing with a mosquito infestation. This after 7 treatments from TruGreen during 2022. Again, I never had this issue with my previous lawn care service. Avoid at all costs if you value your lawn."

Because it’s native to the central United States and Canada and is drought-tolerant, it typically is not difficult to grow. It requires very little maintenance and minimal watering beyond rainfall. Experts typically recommend aerating your lawn about once per year, but your aeration frequency will depend on your soil type, lawn condition, and other factors. For instance, you should aerate annually if you have clay-heavy soil or frequent foot traffic in your backyard. However, if your soil is loose or sandy and you don't use your yard often, you can probably aerate every other year.

Try the tool test first. A screwdriver or a similarly long, thin tool will work best, as spades and shovels are too big. If something still seems off despite the screwdriver smoothly going into the soil, look for other signs that you need aeration, like thinning grass, discolored areas, and puddles forming on your lawn after light rain. This indicates poor drainage because of too many areas being compacted.

Not only are lawn depressions unsightly, they also cause your yard to be uneven and have divots, which can be a tripping hazard. Lawn depressions also make mowing more difficult and can potentially cause damage to your mower.

Some grass types grow better than others on hard dirt. For example, hardy grass types like perennial ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass will grow better on tough soil. Keep in mind that you should still consider your area’s climate when deciding on a grass type.
