"I am very pleased with refurbished deck. The pergola was pressure washed and stained. The deck was demoed to the framing and rotted joists replaced. All of the deck boards were replaced and meticulously cut around the pool. The worksite was cleaned up every night. Very pleased."

"Abi was very pleasant and patient because he had to keep coming back to complete the deck due to so much rain. I know this was cost-consuming as well as time-consuming but he remained very pleasant and professional. I'm grateful for a job well done."

"I was incredibly impressed with the professionalism and responsiveness of Pro Painters Plus. I needed my deck re-finished within a certain time frame to comply with my community's association regulations. Mike and his crew were able to work with my schedule and complete the job promptly and with incredibly high quality. The deck looks great, and I would highly recommend Pro Painters Plus."

"R Joness painting exceeded our expectations. We worked with Hugo throughout the entire process of repainting the entire first floor of our home and our newly remodeled upstairs bathroom. He patiently adjusted the timeline and the purest scope made suggestions and offered the most competitive estimate. His crew was equally professional and hardworking. They spent a great deal of time prepping to ensure we were completely satisfied with the outcome (we had several areas that needed significant prep). They were punctual, started, and completed the work on time. Hugo was consistently on-site to check in with the crew. Truly professional and outstanding service. Will recommend R Jones and use them again in the future."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Wood stains last anywhere from two to five years, depending on exposure to the elements, your local climate, the type of stain, and the surface it’s on. For instance, vertical surfaces last longer than horizontal surfaces. Some types of woods, like dense hardwoods, will require a recoat yearly, as they are too dense for the stain to absorb. In any event, apply a recoat every 2 to 4 years. As for storage, a can of unopened stain can last up to 5 years, though results may vary.

Staining a deck is typically less expensive upfront than painting. The cost to stain a deck professionally averages around $850, with most homeowners paying between $550 and $1,250, depending on the deck's size. A DIY staining project can cost less than $100. The cost to paint a deck ranges from $500 to $2,000. While the initial cost of staining is lower, it's important to consider long-term expenses. Paint can last up to 10 years, whereas stain needs to be reapplied every few years, which could lead to higher costs over time.

Yes, you can and should paint or stain pressure-treated wood to help prevent the boards from cracking. However, you must wait for the wood to dry out completely before applying any finish. Freshly treated wood can take weeks or even months to dry; a common recommendation is to wait three to six months. To check if the wood is ready, perform a simple water test: drip some water onto the surface. If the water beads up, the wood is still too wet and needs more time to dry. If the wood absorbs the water, it is dry enough to be painted or stained. You can proceed with building your deck or fence while the wood is still wet, but you will need to wait to apply the paint or stain.

Whether you can paint over your existing paint depends on what’s on there. Most of the time, you’ll want to sand down or scrape off the paint that’s currently coating your surface. Epoxy paint, for example, won’t let new paint stick to the surface. Latex paint is more forgiving and will accept a new coat, but a primer is recommended if you’re switching colors.

For homes in areas with extreme weather, high heat, or intense sun exposure, high-quality acrylic paint is the best option. Acrylic paint is durable, resistant to both heat and cold, and provides a protective barrier with excellent UV resistance. For best results, look for acrylics that contain natural earth pigments, which are better suited for resisting sun damage. While oil-based paint is also durable, it can be prone to fading in high heat and can become too viscous to apply easily in cold temperatures. Additionally, choosing a neutral or light color like gray, beige, or white can help, as these colors absorb less heat than darker shades.
