"Stewart Home Remodeling is a top notch contractor that does quality work at a reasonable price. Jim Stewart is extremely responsive and reliable. Jim came out to my home for an estimate on siding repair and wound up completing the job on the same day. His knowledge and honesty shine through and I was happy to have him do the work immediately. He explained what would be done, step-by-step, how long it would take & how much it would cost. The job was completed as he had explained and it looks amazing!! I would recommend this company to anyone needing exterior repairs!!!"

"It was a little expensive, but I had some extra stuff that needed to be done as well. And William was straightforward when issuing the estimate. It was worth it. William and his team were AWESOME, PROFESSIONAL and had GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!! I forgot to say NEAT and cleaned everything up. That was a plus for me, because some contractors leave evidence of their presence behind. Thanks again William."

"I called The Driveway Lady to get a quote and ideas on how to solve a difficult problem with my concrete porch. My home was built in the late 1800s and has a large raised concrete wrap around porch surrounded by beautiful stone walls. Replacement would be prohibitive, but there were some substantial cracks and pitting. It was like walking on an ocean reef, it was so rough, and the repairs made to the cracks wouldn’t hold, but Jean determined that it was otherwise secure with no water penetration below. She suggested they repair the cracks with hydraulic cement and then coat the entire surface with Miracote to seal both the cracks and smooth the surface and protect from future pitting. They worked with me to get the color right when I didn’t like the initial application.  Jean stands by her work and does an outstanding job. The people she has working for her are also courteous, pleasant and easy to work with. I can’t recommend her and her team enough."

"Johnston General Contracting did very fine work on power washing and sealing my deck. The deck looks great. While he was late on the first day of the job the second day he was right on time. I would recommend this company. The only negative would be that the price seemed on the expensive side."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Building a deck isn't too hard if you’re handy with carpentry, have the necessary tools, and are willing to put effort into it. However, other factors, such as plans, permits, and design, can be hard if you don’t have experience in those areas.

Note: You’ll need another person to help you build the deck (especially for framing and setting the beams). Building a deck yourself will be very difficult if you don’t have an extra set of hands to help.

A random orbital sander is best for sanding a deck because it is easier to handle than other power sanders and is less likely to damage the wood. Most decks are made of types of softwood, so a gentler sanding process is essential to prevent permanent blemishes. For example, belt sanders can gouge softwoods.

When staining a deck, don’t skip surface prep, avoid staining damp or dirty boards, and don’t apply stain in extreme heat, cold, or wet conditions. Never overload the wood with a stain, as too much can cause tackiness or peeling. Also, don’t forget to test a small area first to ensure the color and finish look right.

While eco-friendly decking, also called composite decking, is a win for the environment because it consists of recycled materials, it has trade-offs. These sustainable options often come with steeper price tags, lack natural wood's warm look, and can become uncomfortably hot under full sun. Some composite materials can also become slick when wet, posing a potential hazard.

It’s important to make sure the wood on a new deck is properly seasoned. Seasoning a deck is simple: Once you build it (or have a pro do so), just leave it alone so it can acclimate to the environment. If you don’t give the deck proper seasoning time before staining, the stain can lock in any lingering moisture and cause mold, rot, and other moisture issues down the road. Give the wood at least four to eight weeks to season before you stain.
