"I hired Dave to do some work in my parents home after they had water damage from a leaking bathroom. Dave had to redo all 3 bathrooms by fixing damaged walls and ceilings, painting, putting in vanities, and tile. He also did some repairs in one of the bathrooms and the basement. Dave is a contractor who is a professional. He communicates and keeps you in the loop throughout the work. He cleaned up nicely took care of things and was trustworthy. It was a 4-5 week project and he assured me that he would finish in time and he did. The cost for the work was reasonable and there were no hidden costs. I highly recommend this business and will use Dave again for any future projects."

"This was the third time I used Mark and he did a fantastic job. The bathroom was a challenge because the space was awkward but needed a shower added. Not only did he find a solution, but it looks great and really improved the value of the property. He did work throughout the house and even redid his work on the front porch railing after a brief conversation about making it look better -- the way he redid the work went above and beyond what I expected and really made everything look so much better. I keep going back to Mark for his work and highly recommend."

"Project went very smoothly. Dan was receptive to changes that we wanted to make midstream, and it was clear that he wanted us to be happy with the final product. Dan is a no nonsense contractor (which we love) and works hard to complete his jobs with quality, timeliness, and decent communication. We'll definitely be calling Reichardt Remodeling for our next project."

"We used Angie’s list to find a contractor to work on our main floor and second floor bathroom (and some other minor work). After several contractors visited our home and told us that they could not convert our main floor bathroom to a full (or quoted an excessive price for the work), we ultimately called CM Contracting after reviewing their ratings on Angie’s list and other sites. In our initial phone consultation, both the head contractor (Chris) and his son (Tyler, also a licensed contractor) were professional, prompt and timely with scheduling a visit. Within 48 hours, Chris and Tyler arrived to the home, accessed both bathrooms and discussed the scope of work required. Unlike other contractors who came up with a number on the spot, CM Contracting said they would research our building plans and get back to us with a number. After a week, we were contacted with a quote and request for a followup meeting. After meeting face to face to discuss the price, we agreed upon the work and a start date, and they acquired all permits needed for the scope of work. At the beginning of work, Tyler took incredible steps to ensure dust and debris would be clear from the main floor by taping paper down on the wood floors and vacuuming/sweeping at the end of the work day. Chris was in constant communication throughout the construction, regularly contacting us to give updates and discuss any minor change in the scope of work. He also did a great job managing his subcontractors, which resulted in a timely completion of the work. His electrician Ken did incredible work with wiring the bathroom and fans in the bedrooms. His plumber Don also did an incredible job removing a non-functioning water softener, plumbed two bathrooms, and installed additional control valves. Most importantly, everyone involved warrantied their work, which is a huge financial relief when choosing a contractor for your home. Overall, we were happy with the daily interactions we had with CM Contracting and their subcontractors and we are very happy with our experience."

"There were some glitches on my part. I didn't realize that the fans required single pole switches. The timer I purchased was a single pole and wouldn't work with the existing configuration. While they started working I ran back to Home Depot and returned the timer and bought the new switches that I needed. Also, the ceiling fan in my son's room required a 60 watt light bulb which I purchased during my return trip. The Home Depot lighting expert directed me to Schadler electric for the correct timer. I returned home with the correct parts and they finished all the jobs as promised and did not charge me anything for the extra time. I can't tell you how much I appreciated that gesture....so seldom found in today's world. I walked through my house and checked each item to make sure it was done correctly before they left my home. Everything checked out perfectly. Honestly, I have been wanting to get these things done for years. My beloved husband passed away 18 months ago and some of these items have needed attention since before he was alive. It is such a good feeling to find a trustworthy contractor especially when they have access to your home's interior. Run to, do not walk to, the next special offer you see on Angie's list offered by Action Door and Property Services. I am fairly certain that you will have that "best present I ever received" feeling like me."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Stick frames, metal frames, or prefabricated concrete frames are included in framing a house, along with creating the framework and space for windows, doors, and entryways. Other aspects of developing a home—like drywall, insulation, windows, doors, and more—are not included in the cost to frame a house.

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.

You can enclose an open carport, however, there are several things to consider before opting to do so. You'll want to check local building codes and permit requirements before proceeding to make sure it’s legal. While you can sometimes stick-frame a carport enclosure, pre-fab kits are also available. Remember that you'll likely need to meet concrete slab regulations and provide lighting inside the structure. Both of which could substantially drive up costs.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

Yes, you will need a jack for a rim joist replacement. To prevent sagging and facilitate the removal of load-bearing wood, you’ll need to relieve the pressure from this joint before beginning work.

Due to hydraulics and other specialized equipment, a sill plate and rim joist replacement are not typically a DIY project. Hiring a professional structural engineer and experienced contractors is the best approach to replacing rotted sill plates and rim joists.
