"Was going to go with Kerl. They know their stuff. However, before I could go ahead with Kerl, my son purchased a boiler for us and arranged with someone he is associated with perform the install. But had son not offered to do this for us, I would have gone ahead with Kerl."

"I had a very hard time finding someone to fix my HVAC - dehumidifier in my home. I finally found Hud Mechanic. Bill contacted the manufacturer of the unit & figured it out. Bill also installed a water holding tank to my well and also replaced my hot water heater. I then asked if he did carpentry which I had an unfinished closet I wanted done. He put up walls,, installed a shelf & a bar & then painted it. He also installed kitchen wall cabinets. Whenever I called his Secretary with a question, she checked with Bill right away & got back to me immediately. I recommend HUD Mechanic for all your repair/install needs! I will be contacting them again. Excellent Contractor!"

"I needed my hot water heater replaced. Mike answered all my questions in detail and explained pros and cons of different systems available with me. He was knowledgeable and my husband and I felt comfortable hiring him. Mike and his son arrived pretty much on time and apologized for being a few minutes later than expected. They introduced themselves and got right to work; they went over what needed to be done after looking over everything. They finished the job in about two hours and went over in detail what they had to do and why in terms that was easy to understand. They were professional and did not leave anything behind to clean up; you would not even know they were there. Amazingly, my two dogs, who are very protective of me and our home, were comfortable with them without having to be bribed with a treat. I recommend hiring them if their service is what you are looking for."

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

Homeowners insurance may cover the repair or replacement of a water heater if it's damaged by a covered peril, such as a fire or a burst pipe. However, policies typically do not cover repairs or replacement needed due to normal wear and tear, old age, or lack of maintenance. For these issues, a home warranty or a manufacturer's warranty may provide coverage. While the policy might not pay to fix or replace the malfunctioning appliance itself, it often covers the cost of water damage restoration caused by the faulty water heater. Always check with your insurance provider to understand the specifics of your policy.

Your water heater's age can affect your homeowners' insurance policy. Many policies will ask how old the heater is when you first apply for a policy—and they may make you replace a model that's over 10 years old.

Even if your policy permits you to have an older heater, it may significantly reduce the amount of protection available. If an older water heater suddenly leaks and causes damage to parts of your home, your policy may not cover it.

A tankless water heater can last up to 20 years, which is nearly double the lifespan of a conventional tank heater. However, their longevity is highly dependent on several factors. With proper installation and regular maintenance, such as descaling to prevent mineral buildup from hard water, you can expect a lifespan of 15 to 20 years. Without proper care, a tankless unit may begin to fail in as little as 12 years. Other factors that affect its lifespan include household usage and the quality of the local water supply. While they have a higher upfront cost, their energy savings, smaller size, and longer life make them a worthwhile investment for many homeowners.

Unless they are connected to the same system, boilers and water heaters will both need their own expansion tanks. The only case they wouldn’t have separate expansion tanks is if the boiler is pulling double duty and managing a heating system while also supplying hot water for a home. In which case, you may not need a hot water heater.

The chemicals in a water softener can wear down the anode rod in the heater and shorten its life span. However, for most people, the benefits of the softener outweigh this potential drawback.

Have a plumber inspect the anode rod annually for damage, as replacing the anode rod is far less expensive than replacing the entire water heater.
