You’ll need vented logs if you have a vented gas fireplace and vent-free logs if you have a ventless gas fireplace. If you aren’t sure which type of fireplace you have, contact a local gas fireplace service. They’ll help identify your fireplace and explain which type of logs you need to run it.

The best place to install a wood stove is near an outside wall. This makes it easier to route a chimney through the roof than if it were located in the dead center of your house. No combustible materials should be near the wood-burning stove, and depending on the building code, 20 inches to 36 inches of space should be allowed between the side wall and the stove.

Electric fireplaces give off more heat than you might think. Because they don’t lose heat through a ventilation system, which is required for wood-burning and gas fireplaces, they’re able to disperse more heat into the room. However, many electric fireplaces are limited to a max of 5,000 or 5,200 BTU heat output, and you can get more from traditional fireplaces.
