"I originally contacted Dan Collins Painting in the early summer for an estimate to paint our copper roof. Dan got back to me promptly, came to our home to price the job and submitted a reasonable estimate which my wife and I accepted. His price was better than the 2 other estimates we had received. The price Dan quoted included power washing using a bleaching component to remove algae, mold & mildew and high quality DTM (Direct To Metal) paint. He suggested several colors to make the roof stand out. After much hemming and hawing, my wife and I finally decided on Colonial Red.

It should be mentioned that before any work on our roof could start, we needed our chimney pointed. Dan referred us to a chimney pointer he knew who we hired. He completed the chimney in early July and did an excellent job. We also needed snow guards/ice breakers to attach to the seams of the roof. Here again Dan suggested a company which we contacted that was able to supply and install the metal guards in the same color (Colonial Red). That company actually held things up for a while, but that certainly wasn't Dan's fault and he kept in touch with us throughout the process. He answers his cell phone when you call!

After a very wet summer and early fall (Hurricane Irene and tropical storm Lee didn't help matters) , 2 of Dan's crew came out and power washed our roof in late September. They did a wonderful job. Around a week later Dan's crew came out to finally paint our roof. Over the course of 3 days with 3 to 4 painters at a time, 2 coats of paint were applied by rolling and spraying. All of Dan's crew were courteous, professional and cleaned up after themselves. They also painted our gutters and downspouts which really finished the job. My wife and I could not be happier with the results and would highly recommend Dan's work."

"New Era Pro Painting exceeded our expectations on all levels. From the very detailed quote to the great care by which they treated our home. They scraped everything, filled in holes, sanded, replaced rotten boards, primed and then painted our entire three story house. The worksite was kept very clean and the team was incredibly responsive and a pleasure to have on our property. We definitely recommend. Our house looks beautiful."

"Response was prompt, came as scheduled. Our driveway is in bad shape but we weren’t ready to replace. Jean and her helper did a great job sealing and filling in the cracks. (We’re aware this is a temporary fix as they’ll return). Looks great considering the condition it was in. The work was meticulously done. Not splatters, stains anywhere. Sidewalk and garage doors perfectly clean. Would definitely hire again."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Stain is meant to be absorbed by the porous wood, allowing some of the natural grain to show through. With that in mind, you don’t want to add more stain than the wood can absorb, as you risk covering up its natural markings. Generally, two coats is the maximum you should do, although very dense hardwoods may only be able to take a single coat.

Eggshell and satin finishes are best for porches because they sit in the sweet spot between scuffable matte and distracting high gloss. Your porch sees a fair amount of wear and tear, so you don’t want paint that’ll show every mark like matte, but you don’t want to be blinded by glossy paint in the sun either. Eggshell and satin have durability and a look that sits nicely in the middle.

Wood stain does go bad, but it will last in the can for between three and six years, provided you use proper storage techniques. Storing wood stain in open containers or in extremely low or high temperatures will cause your wood stain to become unusable much more quickly. Water- and latex-based wood stains typically last for just two to four years, while oil-based wood stains can last for three to six years.

Two coats of stain are ideal for the best protection and aesthetic appeal. However, if your decking is made of particularly dense hardwood, you may only need one coat. If you want an intense color, two coats are ideal.

Always sand a deck before repainting so the wood is smooth and ready for paint. While you do not need to fully remove paint before repainting, sanding helps remove any areas with weather and sun damage. Sanding also helps remove chipped or flaking paint and opens the wood pores to improve paint adhesion.
