Peel-and-stick wallpaper isn’t the best choice to cover wood paneling. Because paneling has a textured, uneven surface with grooves and peel-and-stick wallpaper has weaker adhesive than traditional wallpaper, you’d need to do a significant amount of prep work to get the wallpaper to lay flat and adhere properly. Peel-and-stick wallpaper works best on painted or primed drywall without a textured finish.

Many types of peel-and-stick wallpaper can hold up to environments with some level of moisture, such as bathrooms—especially peel-and-stick wallpapers made of vinyl or polyester. However, if you’re considering wallpapering a bathroom that sees a lot of moisture, like a kids’ bathroom or a full bathroom with a steamy shower and inadequate ventilation, even the highest quality wallpapers will peel.

To layer wallpaper over wallpaper, inspect your existing wallpaper for problem areas. Damaged wallpaper should not be covered. If it’s okay to proceed, prep by turning off the electricity and removing any outlet and switch covers. Dust your walls and lightly rinse them to prevent the existing paper from peeling. Apply primer, then apply your new wallpaper.

Hanging wallpaper may seem simple, but in practice it requires significant planning and finesse to make it look professional. To start, you need to get an even application of wallpaper paste across all of your wallpaper, which requires experience and large pasting tables to get right. You also need to plan out your design and match it exactly so that you don’t have imperfections in the finished product.
