"Ken came out within a couple of days of my contacting him to look at our house. A few days after that we had a quote in hand. The initial price was just a little over what another contractor quoted us but Ken applied an Angie's List discount and the price was right on. We chose Ken's because his contract was thorough, he explained things well and he was quick and easy to work with.
Ken's team was supposed to start at 8am Monday morning and they were sitting out front at 7:45 waiting to start. The foreman walked the exterior of the property with us and we talked about trim and paint. He made suggestions and we made a final plan within a couple of minutes.
The whole team got right to work sanding, caulking, taping, etc.. Everyone in our family headed out to their various locales for the day and I got an email from Ken at 2:30 letting me know that his painters would be done the same day. When we got home about 5pm the house was done, everything was clean and the painters were gone. The small equipment trailer stayed parked at the curb over night but was gone by the time we were up in the morning.
This being our first house painting experience, we were very pleased with the workmanship and ease of the job. We have had comments from all of our neighbors about how good our house looks and how professional the painters were when they were at our home.

"I originally called F/X repairs several months before we actually met but because the closing of the property kept getting delayed in escrow, I kept having to delay getting bids to repair the place for rental. I asked Bob at that time to call me back in two weeks which he did. He was friendly, we got delayed again, he called again and each time he called back exactly when he said he would. Finally, in late November we closed on the property and he came by the next week to give me a bid. He checked out all the things I wanted done, wrote down the repairs needed, looked at what needed painting and wrote everything down. I liked him a lot and was thinking I was likely to use him for the whole project if the bid was in my ballpark between $3500-5000. He told me he'd get me the proposal and bid on Friday (it was Wednesday) and we parted very friendly. Then nothing. Nothing. No call. No email. I waited 10 days, got other bids and went another direction. I was a bid dumbfounded because he had been so friendly. Curiosity finally got the better of me and I gave him a call just to find out what happened. I actually wondered if something bad might have happened. Anyway, he was apologetic, said he had no excuse, and just didn't get it done. Oh well, no harm no foul. I guess I'm glad I didn't hire him and find out later he (they) just wouldn't show up.

"The job was completed on time and the deck looks fine. We did ask for a 45-degree corner on the deck to soften the edge and this was not done as specified. However, we still like the look of the deck. Since this was an Angie's Big Deal, the project was worth the value.

Wallpapering questions, answered by experts

To layer wallpaper over wallpaper, inspect your existing wallpaper for problem areas. Damaged wallpaper should not be covered. If it’s okay to proceed, prep by turning off the electricity and removing any outlet and switch covers. Dust your walls and lightly rinse them to prevent the existing paper from peeling. Apply primer, then apply your new wallpaper.

Walls should be as smooth as possible before applying peel-and-stick wallpaper. Although you technically can apply wallpaper on textured walls, the peel-and-stick variety won’t last long without a clean, smooth surface for the adhesive to stick to. If you have textured walls, consult a pro about removing the textured finish before moving forward with wallpaper.

We don’t recommend wallpapering over older paper. That’s because creating layers of glue can invite bubbling or excess moisture on the wall’s surface. You should also prime your wall before applying wallpaper and smooth the wall as much as you can, and another layer of wallpaper complicates this process.

There can be too much of a good thing when it comes to accent walls, so avoid creating one in every room in your house. Some rooms, like bathrooms and kitchens, don’t naturally lend themselves to accent walls, so it’s best to skip them there. Of course, your home should reflect your own sense of style, so if accent walls in multiple rooms appeal to you, there’s no hard-and-fast rule forbidding it.

Options include bricks, natural stone, and concrete blocks. Choose based on durability, aesthetics, and budget.
