A water hammer refers to the banging or knocking sound you hear in your water pipes after you turn off your faucet or when your washing machine or dishwater fills. This happens when highly pressurized water suddenly stops moving in your pipes due to a valve closing or your well pump shutting down quickly. Try adjusting the pressure setting on your water pressure tank—it should be below 50 psi (pounds per square inch). Or have a plumber install a water hammer arrestor.

Low water pressure is the most common problem with showerheads. Whether it’s due to scale and calcium buildup, clogs, age, or damage, poor showerhead spray costs you time and a relaxing experience. If your showerhead is in good condition except for buildup or clogged holes, try cleaning it with a scale or calcium remover. If the showerhead is old, rusty, cracked, or damaged, it’s time to replace it.

Replacing a shower drain P-trap costs $150 to $250 for parts and labor. Costs increase to $350 or more if your shower drain assembly is difficult to access or requires more work (like replacing pipes and fittings). If you’re a knowledgeable DIYer, a new P-trap costs $10 to $45.

Pool leaks most commonly occur around the joints of your pool, such as around the skimmer, return line entrance, main drain, or the lining of the floor tile. Tears are also common in vinyl liners between five and 20 years after installation. While leaks in pool piping are common, it does happen, and so they should be tested after you've ruled out other possibilities. 

A toilet flapper will remain open when the chain that it is connected to is too short. The chain should lift the flapper just enough to allow it to open the rest of the way on its own. The chain should have just about half an inch of slack.
