"Oldcastle Construction laid a flagstone patio and brick walkway for me. The placement of the flagstone pieces is beautiful and done without unnatural saw cuts. The brick walkway was laser straight and level. I couldnâ t be happier with both projects!"

Their work was deployed quickly and well organized. Over the past decade, my organization has completed fourteen (14) complex and successful stabilization of foundations. "From the first visit to my home from Sean for an estimate, to the crew that arrived to do the project I was impressed. Everyone was extremely professional. The crew arrived on time, the crew leader introduced me to the rest of the crew and explained how they would proceed with the project. They protected the work spaces with plastic from my garage to the crawl space opening in side my closet. They went to work and kept me informed about the progress. The whole crew worked very efficiently and got the project done in one day. They left work area spotless when they were done. I would highly recommend this company for any waterproofing project!!"

"After another contractor left us with a disaster, Atlas Construction came to our rescue. Austin was professional, fair, and maintained excellent communication throughout the entire process. Austin handled multiple unforeseen issues and damages with professionalism and expertise. His meticulous attention to detail is remarkable - he truly goes above and beyond on every aspect of the job. Our beautiful new walk-in tile shower not only looks incredible but also restored our faith in contractors. Finding trustworthy, skilled contractors can be challenging, but Atlas Construction delivers on both fronts. We're already planning to use them for future construction, deck building, and landscape projects."

"I hired Ben to recreate a retaining wall on my property. I gave home some guidance on how it should look, provided pictures and examples, however as he started to lay it out I had some modifications and feedback. He took all feedback and used his skills and experience to make it look natural but also function as a retaining wall. Beautiful and functional work at the end of the day and very reasonable pricing."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Brick spalling—which refers to the crumbly, flaky, or pitted appearance that can develop over time—is caused by a few different conditions. These include:

  • Climates with constant freeze-thaw cycles

  • Use of non-breathable sealants

  • High-pressure water cleaning

  • Improper installation

While you can’t do anything about the weather, you can preserve your bricks by cleaning them with soapy water and a good old-fashioned scrubbing. Pressure washers may be satisfying to use, but they can eventually wear away the surface of your bricks. If you don’t have advanced-level DIY skills in masonry, you can hire a reputable masonry contractor in your area for your project.

Yes, but used or reclaimed bricks can be more brittle, cracked, or uneven than new bricks, so they’re harder to cut cleanly by hand. For that reason, you should take extra care when scoring and striking, and expect a higher chance of breakage. If a brick feels especially fragile, score deeper before attempting to split it.

Certain towns and homeowner associations (HOAs) ban brick mailboxes because of the risk of obstruction. They are sometimes only permitted in cases where four or more homes share a mailbox. Homeowners may need to obtain special permits in some locations. One of the top masonry contractor hiring tips is to ask a local pro if they can show you examples of recent work that meets local code regulations.

Most of the time, you don’t need to seal brickwork and can save that money for another area of home improvement. But if your brick is cracking or you live in an area with a lot of excess moisture (either in terms of rain or freezes), sealing can extend the lifetime of your home. But, make sure you use a breathable sealant, like siloxane, to allow the moisture to evaporate on its own.

Yes, you can paint stone on the exterior of a house. It’s important to properly prep the stone by cleaning off dirt and debris. You’ll want to apply at least two coats of paint to get the most even and complete coverage. Any pinholes or missed spots, however small, can allow moisture to get into the masonry and potentially cause the paint to blister and peel from the stone.
