"I had an emergency and JR Insulation Drywall did an amazing job. I had just sold my house, and in the process of moving, the movers broke a pipe that had to be repaired behind a wall on the day we gave possession to the new owners. I called JR Insulation Drywall and they were there the same day I called and did a wonderful job of the repair. Responsive, quality, and for a great price. Yes, it is possible to have too much insulation, which can have detrimental effects. While more insulation might seem better for energy efficiency, a home needs to "breathe" or ventilate to release moisture that accumulates inside. Over-insulating can seal a house too tightly, trapping water vapor and leading to several problems, including mold, mildew, and condensation. Homes in warm, humid climates are particularly susceptible to mold, while those in colder climates can experience condensation from temperature fluctuations. Additionally, adding more insulation than the recommended amount for your climate may not provide recoverable energy savings. To avoid these issues, consult a professional insulation contractor who can determine the optimal amount of insulation for your home.

At a minimum, blown-in insulation lasts 20 to 30 years. Cellulose and sheep’s wool come from natural materials, so they likely max out at around 30 years. Fiberglass and rockwool feature artificial materials that boast lengthy lifespans, up to 50 years, or even longer in some cases. As always, this timeline assumes you don’t run into any issues, such as flooding or mold, that shorten the lifespan.

You do not always need to remove old insulation before adding new. If the existing insulation is in good condition—not wet, physically damaged, moldy, or infested with pests—you can add new insulation directly on top of it for a compounding effect. You can also mix different types, such as adding blown-in insulation around existing fiberglass batts.

However, removal is recommended if the old insulation is compromised by water damage or pests. You should also remove it if you plan to install a different type of insulation, like switching from roll or batt insulation to spray foam. If the existing insulation is very old or damaged, you will likely get more benefit from removing it and starting fresh.

Traditional clapboard siding, particularly with panels made from wood, is not a significant insulator on its own. However, you can keep your home cooler in summer and warmer with "insulated clapboard siding," which is a type of vinyl clapboard siding with a built-in foam insulation. Consult a local siding contractor to determine whether insulated siding is right for your home.

Polyisocyanurate foam, or polyiso for short, has the highest R-value per square inch: 6.5 to 6.8. Polyiso is a rigid foam that comes with a reflective foil on both sides to serve as a radiant barrier. Given its high R-value, rigid foam is usually meant for foundations and basement walls.
