"John came over and checked out the roof for the bid.  He had the bid for us in a couple of days.  That was quick turn around. We accepted the bid and John and his mother came by and brought a lot of samples for my wife and I to look at.  We set the roofing samples out in the front yard so my wife could get a better idea of the color of the products.  It was a good idea because it allowed us to see what the color would look like against the color of our house and what it looks like in natural light.  We spent a lot of time comparing products colors and asking lots of questions.  John and his mother were very patient with us and our questions.  My wife and his mother consulted a lot on the various color combinations and textures of the products.  john and his mother  were very professional and personable.  They understood that it was a big investment for us and allowed us to take our time.  What we appreciated was they did not try to up sale or push a particular line of products.  We did choose one product that was more money than the one we originally thought we liked. After we made the selection, they gave us a timeline and an overview of the work.
The timeline had to be moved due to rain for a week or so and John kept us informed.  Being informed is important to us.   John and his crew arrived on time and got right to work.  They were fast and efficient. It only took a day for the new roof to be installed and it looked great.  They cleaned up and hauled off all the old materials and picked up the debris out of the front and back yards.  We found a few stray staples but nothing to be concerned about.
Mid Valley is one of a few certified Owens-Corning contractors in the Salem area.  By being certified Mid Valley could extend the  manufacturers standard warranty of 20 years to 50 and it doesn't cost the home owner anymore.  Got to love a bonus. Owens-Corning will only extend the warranty if their products are installed by a certified approved contractor.  Mid Valley is. The warranty is backed by Owens-Corning not by individual contractors who may not be in business before the warranty expires. We checked to make sure the warranty is legit and it is.  We took several bids and reviewed them.  Mid Valley was a little higher than the lowest.  I called John and asked if he would match the bid.  I told him what the bid was and he said he would match it.  I was all set for some haggling or some grumbling but NONE of that happened it was really nice.
We had some concerns about getting the warranty information and I called John.  He always answers his phone and I explained my concern.  He told me that he would look into it and get back to me.  John said Owens was a bit behind and we would get our info.   A few weeks went by and no info, so I called John.  He contacted Owens and got back to me. A couple of weeks went by and no info.  I again contacted John about it.  He followed up with emails to Owens-Corning and he forwarded the responses from their representative.  Which revealed the warranty info was registered by John but Owens-Corning dropped the ball in getting it out to us and they said for John to give us their direct contact info.  Which he did. It will be another few weeks before we get the info.  This is important,  John never groaned or sounded unhappy nor did he try to avoid me when I spoke with him about this issue.  This is great customer service.  I can not say enough about the great service.  John even answers his email on weekends.  That is very rare these days for a business to do that.  We did have a question about what appeared as lumpy shingles on some parts of the roof.  We called and John explained that the lumpy shingles will flatten out when the temperature gets warmer.  And they did.  My wife is happy about that.  We enjoyed our experience with Mid Valley building LLC and we have recommended them to several friends.  Great workmanship great price and outstanding costumer service.  Oh yeah and NO LEAKS.   They do other work besides roofs.  We would use them again."

"We weren't that happy with the results. It was a few years ago, and the surface is still pretty much intact. He had to use a primer and deck paint, rather than stain, and the primer showed through in several places as bright white marks against the dark brown stain. He left the extra paint so we could refinish where we wanted. We don't want or expect any follow up at this time. I understand that the deck needed a lot more work than the worker expected. So, my experience may not be a fair representation of this particular contractor.

"They did a real good job. They were real professional. We can now open the garage door from the inside of the house and now it is so smooth that we have to check to see if we hit the button to open it or close it.  Before we used to know when it was opening or closing because it used to make a noise. It helps when you move to a city where you are new. "

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

Costs depend on furniture type, size, complexity, and whether additional modifications are needed.

You can enclose an open carport, however, there are several things to consider before opting to do so. You'll want to check local building codes and permit requirements before proceeding to make sure it’s legal. While you can sometimes stick-frame a carport enclosure, pre-fab kits are also available. Remember that you'll likely need to meet concrete slab regulations and provide lighting inside the structure. Both of which could substantially drive up costs.

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.

Converting a carport into a garage can vary in difficulty depending on its configuration, the condition of the foundation or slab, and its location relative to the house. The process has a lot in common with a home addition, but you can often skip non-essential finishes like fine flooring, trim work, or even drywall and HVAC. The conversion requires experience with drywall, insulation, and other building materials to ensure it’s done safely and correctly. While it might be possible for a DIYer with the proper tools and skills to do the work, it is a complicated and potentially dangerous job. If you’re new to basic construction, it's best to leave this project to the professionals.
