It is safe to flush the toilet even if the pipes are frozen, and this may even help clear out the pipes. But if the supply line is frozen, the toilet won’t refill itself until it’s thawed out. You can still flush by pouring water into the tank to refill it.
You can use a water gauge to check that water pressure, which should be between 40 and 60 PSI. If you don’t have a water gauge, you can also time how long your showerhead takes to fill up a 1-liter container. If it takes longer than 6 seconds, you’re dealing with a case of low water pressure.
You can try a few things to figure out where a water leak is coming from. Check all of your appliances and fixtures, make sure the water pressure is normal on your faucets, and look for signs of water damage. Some signs of a leaky pipe include water stains on ceilings and walls, paint or wallpaper that starts bubbling, a musty smell, or visible signs of mold.
After flushing the toilet, you should have about half a tank full of water. While the exact amount of water you’ll have will vary, you want to make sure you have enough to cover the bottom of the bowl and enough to sit above the P-trap drain. While low water in your toilet bowl can indicate a problem, too much water can also be cause for concern.
White vinegar or baking soda can remove the crusty white deposits that minerals leave behind. A paper towel soaked in vinegar and wrapped around your faucet can effectively dissolve scale, but can be corrosive to some materials like brushed nickel if left on too long. For materials that can’t withstand vinegar, a paste of baking soda and water applied with a toothbrush can gently scrub away scale deposits.
