Advanced Vertical Solutions, LLC D.B.A. AVS Elevator is built on the life long experience as a 4th generation native Oregonian and 2nd generation elevator constructor. Frank A. Stalen and his father Paul J. Stalen have spent their elevator careers and lives in the City of Portland, contributing to its local communities. Their combined Oregon history brings AVS Elevator an in-depth study of the elevator industry dating back to the early 1950‘s and an understanding of its place in our ever growing economy and local communities. The birth of AVS Elevator came from a steady decline of the service offered by the industry as a whole. For example, the annual service work load for the average elevator constructor has elevated from approximately 50 elevators to 300 per man and growing. Safety, reliability and customer service has been marginalized as profit taking and ever growing overhead percentages drive the work loads of the elevator constructors beyond the breaking point by the industry conglomerates. “We have set out to bring you an alternative choice and to fill a void in the industry.” In developing our business plan with Mercy Corps Northwest. A benefit of being a local, family owned business, we have the ability to set this culture by example and provide the time employees need to foster the culture of giving. Home Inspection questions, answered by experts

Repiping your home creates a large mess, and you won’t have access to water while your contractors are working. To prepare, contractors will cover the floor and furniture with drop clothes. In some cases, they may move furniture to protect it and get it out of the way. They’ll then cut holes in your walls, floors, and ceiling to expose the existing pipes.

They’ll also turn off your water, but they’ll leave at least one bathroom and the kitchen functioning at the end of the day. You’ll need to plan accordingly.

Hiring a structural engineer who inspects foundations is the best way to find out if your foundation is up to code. These pros know building codes in and out and can inspect your foundation and prepare a report detailing anything that doesn’t meet code. A structural engineer can also recommend fixes for any problems they spot—you’ll just need to hire a foundation contractor to do the work.

You can test your ductwork by hiring a technician to attach a vacuum to the ductwork near the HVAC unit and put the vent system under pressure. Your pro can use a duct leak tester to measure the amount of pressure that's escaping.

You can also do a DIY test using an incense stick or smoke pencil. With the HVAC system running, pass the stick or pencil across the ductwork. Pay attention to the movement of the smoke. When you notice it changing, it could be a sign there’s a leak or bad connection in the duct.

Checking for mold yourself is crucial, as catching mold in the early stages is ideal. Mold can appear green, brown, black, blue, or yellow. It can smell musty and can feel like velvet, leather, or cotton.

Most often, mold grows near water damage. It’s best to inspect these places for signs of mold growth:

  • Basement: Look in corners, windows, carpet, closets, and around appliances.

  • Bathrooms: Check around sinks, ceilings, and around toilets.

  • Kitchen: Inspect around the sink, behind the refrigerator, and behind trash can.

  • Attic: Look near the insulation and near intake and exhaust vents.

Unfortunately, home inspections do not check for asbestos because of the liability factor involved. That’s why you should hire a trained professional with specialized equipment to test for it.

They will inspect all areas of the home and take samples of various materials to test. Opting for an asbestos inspection can prevent the risk of exposure to this hazardous material and save on costly repairs that may be required.
