"Once I sent her all the measurements, it took her a little while to get the options back to me.  Overall, they're good designs.  However, they're very simplistic and give general ideas for space planning.  I was hoping to have a better idea for sizes of furniture for the space and some variations on staging.  
Jill was very responsive when I did have a question.  I'm not sure how helpful it is to have a virtual design done.  If we lived in similar cities, I'd probably use her again for help with additional designs.

"It is a waste of money. The great majority of people are not going to find any value out of the service. If you need design consultation, you need a full service consultation. If you already have knowledge and experience, and you just need to get a few ideas, then you don't need to pay for that. You can just get a magazine or a book since you already have the knowledge of basic designs in your head or a little bit of experience. To have someone call you and give you information over the phone, you are not getting the personal service that you need. You may as well take the money $49 and apply it to something else like getting someone else to come out and give you the service that you need. Because, you are not getting much, you are not getting anything at all. They are going to have you do the work. After talking to them and I was talking to other home designers, I found out that that was a waste of time and waste of money. I gave them a C because they didn't fail at what they do but they don't offer any value for what they do. There's not much value to it. The cost was fair. They didn't do a terrible job and the cost isn't terrible, it was only $49. It just has a very low value. For responsiveness I gave them a B because they will answer your phone and answer your emails."

"John showed up to give us a bid, looking like a carpenter.  He had a very easy demeanor and answered my questions easily and directly.  He checked out the roof quickly and emailed me his bid soon after.  Of the 6 bids we got for a new roof and gutters, Johns was by a couple thousand dollars, the lowest.  That made me a little uneasy, but he was also the easiest to ask questions and the least pushy of all of the others.  He's no middleman- he's on the roof with his crew.  I think that's where he saved us the money.  Against the howls of "you'll get day laborers for that price!" and "those shingles don't hold up!" from the other contractors, I chose to go with John.  He accurately picked the weather window on his second guess (the first was easter weekend, and rained anyways), and when he and his crew showed up, they chatted and joked easily while getting set up.  They seemed like a bunch of good buddies.  But when they stepped foot on the roof, things happened fast!  I had to leave that day, but my neighbor, a retired carpenter, watched them work all day, and told me they were a very impressive crew, very professional.  In the one day, they had the 32 square roof pulled and the debris in the trailer, as well as nearly a quarter of the shingles over high quality synthetic roofing underlayment.  I'd asked for some ice/water shield in the valley, and they did it.  The next day, the roof was done.  I'm a hard guy to please, I care about quality work and have done a lot of work remodeling my house.  Before the gutters went up, I had noticed a few things that I wasn't sure were good or not.  John came the next day, and walked through my problems with me.  There was no p****** match, he wanted to make sure I understood why some things were done and fixed the things that I was uncomfortable with.  As I said, I'm very particular.  I'm sure the things I had him fix would've been just fine, and most roofers would have left it.  But he came back, worked underneath the shingles, and made me happy.  And the gutters were beautiful!  John is an honest guy that works to maintain his good reputation.  He's worth hiring."

"Not very well.  In our case, this company tried to reschedule at the last minute, the morning the work was supposed to happen.  We had already moved all the furniture to the middle of the room and made arrangements in our schedule to be here. 
My wife called Max and scheduled the work about two weeks in advance.  We did not get any routine follow up calls a day or two before to confirm the appointment.  She called the morning the work was supposed to happen, and left a msg.  Max called her back and said, "I was going to call you and see if we could reschedule."  Surprised, she said that would not work, that our bedroom was all in disarray in preparation for the one-day job, and that we had rearranged our weekend schedule to make this happen.
Max called back and said he had arranged for a painter and that he would be here at noon.  He did not show up until after 2 p.m., so we called back to check on things when he was an hour or so past due. 
The painter who came was polite and did good work.  However, we had to rearrange our day and be here later than expected given the fact that he got such a late start. 
The painter seemed to work quite slowly.  We had just had a professional painter redo a number of rooms downstairs, who was recommended by our remodeling contractor, and he seemed a lot faster.  Then again, he was working on a bid price, and not for X hours of work.
