We were able to split the roofing project into two phases to offset the impact of the cost, which was so helpful. The workers who came to replace the roof were courteous, efficient and paid great attention to detail. Every scrap of waste material was picked up. They even managed to avoid crushing any of the daffodils which were near many of the access points to the roof. The flashing and vent systems look much better than the ones we had on the roof previously. We are so pleased! We would definitely hire them again."

While it’s a somewhat common method for hanging Christmas lights, using a staple gun is not safe for your roof. Poking any kind of hole can potentially damage your roof and expose it to the elements, whether it’s from nails or a staple gun. Shingle tabs are the best way to hang lights on your roof without the damage.

You can walk on a TPO roof, but you should only do so when necessary and wear footwear that’s less likely to puncture the surface. If you anticipate needing to frequently walk on your TPO roof, reinforce walkways to protect against punctures. TPO roofing can also be slippery, so in most cases, you’ll want to leave walking on it to the pros.

You can install solar panels on a flat or pitched roof, but keep in mind that they will need to rest at a 30- to 50-degree tilt for optimal sun absorption. It costs more to install solar panels on a flat roof because you will need to install a framing system and likely hire a structural engineer. If your roof has a pitch of more than 40 degrees, it may not be a good candidate for solar panels.

You can put new shingles over old shingles, but most municipalities only allow for two layers of shingles before you have to rip off the old roof and start fresh. In some areas, only a single layer of shingles is allowed due to the weight a bundle of shingles adds to your structure. In most cases, it’s a good idea to remove your old shingles before you install new shingles, especially if you suspect that a roof leak may have compromised the decking underneath.

Depending on the type of damage your roof shingles have, you may be able to simply repair them without having to replace them. However, if there are more than a few to repair, replacement is likely the easier option. You may only need to replace a few of them. Repair shingles by applying roofing sealant directly under the shingle's damage and then directly over it.
