Paver patios are often considered the most durable option. Expensive options include pavers of natural stone like granite, and more affordable choices include concrete and brick. All these materials are weather-resistant and are easy to replace individually if damaged. When installed over a well-compacted base and maintained correctly, paver patios can last 50 years or more, making them a long-lasting outdoor choice.
Deck pier blocks are one alternative to traditional deck footings. Unlike poured concrete and buried post footings, deck blocks don’t require digging or pouring. They’re best for small or low-to-the-ground decks. Keep in mind, though, that not all areas allow the use of deck pier blocks, so consult your local building codes before choosing them for your deck.
Some patios will cause your property taxes to increase, while others will not. A good rule of thumb is that if your patio requires a permit, your taxes will increase. That’s because permits are necessary for “permanent” land improvements, and your taxes are based partially on improvements.
