You can paint an old wooden fence, but make sure first to do a deep clean (ideally with a pressure washer) and inspect the fence for any existing damage. If you’re painting shiplap, the best way to get full coverage is actually to use both a paintbrush and a roller. You can start by using a brush to cut in the edges and fill in the gaps and finer grooves of the wood. Then, you can go back over the entire space with a roller to ensure an even, smooth finish. 

You may or may not be able to paint over your old exterior paint. If the existing paint is in good shape, then you can paint a new layer on top. No, you shouldn’t mix paint thinner with latex paint. To thin latex pain, add water instead. Use 1/2 cup of water per gallon of paint to start until you reach your paint’s desired thickness — never use more than 4 cups of water per gallon of paint.

For larger areas, like painting walls, a roller is the best option for applying eggshell paint. Rollers are made to hold more paint and spread it evenly and efficiently over your wall. A roller will be faster and give you a more even coat than a brush for painting walls and ceilings, and it will avoid the visible texture you’d get from brushstrokes for a clean finish. For smaller areas, like trim, a brush will work so long as you remember to paint with the grain of the wood.
