"Christy in the office, and Chris, the technician who cleaned my upholstered furniture, were both terrific. I didn't have to wait too long for an appointment which Christy called to reconfirm, and Chris called when he was on the way. Job done with full explanations of how and why, and Chris suggested that I not clean one chair that was questionable. But the best part of their service was when the sofa dried with some white streaks; I called Christy to advise them; Chris took a van home so that he could come by my place the next day - a Saturday - to fix the problem, which he did. Incredible professionalism and service, and friendly, too. Highly recommended with thanks."

"My antique desk was damaged by Allied Van Lines in a cross country move. Jeff and his staff carefully fixed the 6-inch crack in the front of the desk and also did some needed rehab on the inside drawers and slots. They returned the desk on time and in beautiful shape. I can heartily recommend Birdsview for their excellent workmanship and customer service."

Upholstering questions, answered by experts

It is generally worth repairing leather furniture rather than replacing it, as it is typically more affordable and the material tends to retain its value. A typical repair averages around $250, which is significantly less than the thousands of dollars a replacement could cost. Even a full reupholstering, which can cost up to $4,000, may still be more economical than buying new. With proper care, repaired leather furniture can last for many years, making the investment worthwhile. However, if the underlying structure or frame of the furniture is damaged or malfunctioning, replacement might be a better option. The quality of the leather and the furniture piece are also important factors. For a definitive answer, it is best to consult a leather repair professional to assess your specific situation.

Reupholstering an old or antique chair can be worthwhile if the frame is still sturdy and the piece has sentimental or monetary value. Reupholstery often costs less than buying a high-quality new chair, and you can customize the look. However, extensive repairs or rare fabrics may increase the total cost.

Yes, many custom builders offer finishing and upholstery options tailored to your style.

It is possible to reupholster directly over old material in some cases, and it can save you a bit of money. If you are going to go this route, make sure you use a darker color than you had previously. Otherwise, you might see the old fabric beneath the new material. You should also keep in mind that reupholstering over old material is only possible with certain materials. For example, reupholstering over leather usually isn’t possible. You can ask your professional to see if this is an option for your piece.

Paying to reupholster a piece of furniture means you want to hire the right upholstery service, especially for a piece that’s expensive or carries a lot of sentimental value. In your search for the right upholstery company, be sure to:

  • Ask around to see if friends or family know of any upholsterers

  • Find reviews of the company or individual

  • Look at the photo gallery of their work to see if they work on furniture like yours and if you like their work

  • Check qualifications and references

  • Ask the upholstery service if they work on furniture like yours, what their schedule looks like, how they handle payments, and how long the job will take
