"This was for safety/maintenance of a long unused gas fireplace. Although pricey, he was knowledgeable, informative, courteous and a one year guaranty was included. So the next time we lose power, I will feel safe using the fireplace for heat."

Your chimney comes with dampers, which are similar to air vents. Dampers are metal plates that allow hot air and smoke to flow from the fireplace up your chimney and out of your home. When you close the damper, it prevents cool air from getting into your home. You can open and close them via an external knob, pull chain, or lever. 

Both wood stoves and fireplaces are effective at heating, but wood stoves are more efficient, meaning more of the fuel is converted to heat rather than lost. Wood stoves, depending on the capacity, can also heat larger spaces, while fireplaces are better for heating smaller areas, like an individual room.

You can let a fire burn out in a fireplace as long as you or someone else will stick around to monitor it until it goes completely out. This may take several hours. To prepare, stop adding fuel to the fire well before you’re ready to call it a night. If you’re using the fireplace for warmth, you’ll want to cover up in some blankets as the flame dies down.
