"It's a pretty decent system, I think. They send you the pieces and you install them yourself, which is pretty easy. The only real problem I have is that one sensor is too far away from the panel...or there's some interference, and they haven't been able to fix that. It's an interior door, so it's not the end of the world, just a little annoying. Their customer service is pretty good though. Nice, smart customer service people on the other end, very polite and helpful."

The disadvantages of a wood-burning stove include a slow heating time and the effort required for fuel. It can take about an hour for a cold stove to produce noticeable heat. Additionally, homeowners must source their own fuel by buying or chopping firewood, cutting it to the appropriate size, and storing it in a dry place. There isn’t a way to convert electric fireplaces easily or cheaply to gas. The process requires major renovations, as opposed to wood fireplaces, which are often already vented and have space for the gas-burning equipment. To convert an electric fireplace to gas, you’d need to remove your old fireplace and get a completely new install.

This will depend on the size of the pellet stove and how much of the house you’re heating, i.e. just one room or the entire house. Many pellet stoves use anywhere from 80 to 345 watts of electricity per hour. In terms of the pellets, a 40-pound bag can cost $5 to $9. A bag of pellets will burn for about 24 hours.

Pellet stoves do require electricity to power their automated features, such as the pellet feeder, fans, and digital controls. However, their electricity consumption is relatively low compared to other household appliances. During a power outage, pellet stoves equipped with battery backup systems or manual ignition options can still operate, though fans and automatic feed mechanisms may not function. Have a backup heating plan in place for these situations, especially if you live in a region prone to severe weather events.

The damper, located just above the firebox, can open or close the chimney flue. The damper should remain closed unless there’s a fire burning in the fireplace. Closing the damper prevents energy loss through the chimney and cold air from seeping into the home during the winter. Opening the damper helps maintain airflow when there is a fire and prevents smoke and gases from venting into the house.
