"This company did exterior paint/stain in white on our small deck & very long privacy fence (28 8 ft. sections); both sides. They did power wash it first, then applied 2 coats of exterior paint. We also hired them to paint/stain our rental's decks in back & front; both in black. This very efficient team did an outstanding job. Looks great!!!"

"Buckeye House Painting did a wonderful job once again staining our deck. They hand-brushed every inch of it and did phenomenal work. We have used the company in the past to stain our pergola and for interior painting. I would highly recommend them for any work you need done and we'll use them again. While everything is pricey anymore, their prices are competitive for the quality of work they do. I would pay them any day vs. doing it myself!"

"Jamie promptly responded to our call for an estimate and came out to give the estimate a couple of days later. He was prompt to respond to any emails or calls we made. During our conversation regarding the estimate, we felt that he was honest and trustworthy. We didn't realize that the first person that had stained our porched sealed and stained over mold. At first, Jamie didn't think he would be able to get the mold off of the porch without an intensive process and gave us options for dealing with the situation. However, he kept trying and was able to get the mold off before he sealed and stained the porch. He made recommendations on stain type and color. Jamie and his helper came out one day to powerwash and returned a few days later to seal/stain the decks, which they finished in one day. The decks look great! We highly recommend A Brush of Class Painting and will definitely use their service again for our decks or any painting we need done. The breakdown of the cost below is $985 for the large deck and $360 for the small deck. It was definitely worth it for us."

"Excellent! The painters were on time every day and moved all furniture/items off deck, power wash, scape and sand all rough wood areas also did extra repairs like fixing my gutters so water wouldn’t leak on the deck and repairs on deck stairs / trim, I wasn’t expecting that extra work they did, top of the line products were use on my two tone deck and it looks beautiful There professionalism and quality of work has far exceeded my expectations and I have and will continue to recommend you to my friends. Thank you Paint and Rollers!"

"I had my garden fence stained with full coverage and they did a great job. She was hard working and did not leave until the job was done. It was a very warm day and there was no shade yet she just kept on working. Very pleased with the process and the results. The pricing was fair and competitive. Day or two later they came back to check results and decided touch up needed to be done. They saw things I did not. Great Job 5 Star!!"

"This is the second time I have used CertaPro and once again they did an excellent job. We had the entire exterior of the house painted including the garage door and front porch floor. Very professional work, done efficiently. My husband noticed a couple of spots that needed a touch up (likely due to some rain that occurred shortly after they finished) and they came right back out and fixed it. I would absolutely use them again."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.

You don’t necessarily have to remove all the old paint before repainting your deck, but it’s best to remove as much as possible to ensure a smooth and long-lasting finish. Prioritize scraping off loose, peeling, or flaking paint, and sand down rough areas to create a smooth surface for the new paint to bond with.

Wood stains last anywhere from two to five years, depending on exposure to the elements, your local climate, the type of stain, and the surface it’s on. For instance, vertical surfaces last longer than horizontal surfaces. Some types of woods, like dense hardwoods, will require a recoat yearly, as they are too dense for the stain to absorb. In any event, apply a recoat every 2 to 4 years. As for storage, a can of unopened stain can last up to 5 years, though results may vary.

Deciding whether to stain or paint a pool deck depends on your budget, desired look, and the deck's material. Both options can work. Paint offers a wider variety of color options, provides excellent water resistance, and can last longer. However, it requires a primer and can eventually fade or peel. Stain is often cheaper, easier to apply, and penetrates the wood for a more natural look and longer-lasting finish. It also has great water resistance. The downsides are fewer color options and the need for a sealant. The choice can also depend on the deck material; for example, staining may be a better option for concrete as it bonds well and lasts longer than paint.

Beyond liquid rubber, homeowners can use sealants, stains, membranes, or tapes as waterproofing options. Oil-based or water-based sealants soak into the wood, creating a moisture-resistant barrier. Waterproofing stains—available in transparent, semi-transparent, and solid colors—add both protection and style to your deck. For heavy-duty waterproofing, deck membranes and waterproof tapes can be applied under the deck boards to direct water away from the structure below. Whatever method you choose, clean and prep the deck first to ensure the best, longest-lasting results.
