"In a word, PERFECT! Bob listened to and answered all of my questions and concearns. He explained exactly how the work would be done and what type of materials he would be using. Although his was not the lowest bid, he gave me confidence that the job would be done right. The crew showed up on time and worked continually, only stopping for lunch. The team forman Patrick was polite and very professional. He was also easy to talk to and listed to any requests that I had. They were very neat and cleaned the area every day. When the job was complete, the house looked like new and was worth every penny spent. I highly recommend Northeast Ohio Renovations."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

As with patios, there are many types of deck choices to choose from to add personalization to your home. Some common deck options include:

  • Attached decks are anchored to the home and include simple ground-level options or multi-level structures with stairways and separate landings.

  • Detached island decks are not attached to the home; they’re a freestanding structure in the yard.

  • Wraparound decks connect the back of the house with at least one other side and often are built with railings for safety.

  • Multi-level decks connect your deck through varying levels of elevation, featuring landings that are attached to stairs.

The least expensive way to build a pool deck is with concrete deck blocks, pressure-treated lumber, and the appropriate hardware for hanging joists and securing deck boards. With these basic yet durable deck materials, you'll have a pool deck that's built to last without the high price tag. You should also stain or seal the deck to protect it against the elements.

Cold temperatures can make your deck boards contract. If they don’t contract evenly, they can put pressure on the deck screws and cause them to pop out, making a noticeable sound. Winterizing your deck can help prevent this from happening.

A random orbital sander is best for sanding a deck because it is easier to handle than other power sanders and is less likely to damage the wood. Most decks are made of types of softwood, so a gentler sanding process is essential to prevent permanent blemishes. For example, belt sanders can gouge softwoods.

In many areas, a floating deck that isn’t connected to your home and stays under 200 square feet and below 30 inches in height may not need a permit. These freestanding structures are often considered low-risk, which can simplify the building process. However, building codes vary greatly based on location. Before investing in any home improvement project, check with your local permitting office for deck-building guidelines.
