Small jobs welcome

"Very good work. They didn t dilly-dally around, worked the whole time. They listened to my concerns about my deck & have input as well as adjusted on the fly to some additional work required. They were very reasonable in pricing & professional. If you need your deck fixed, cleaned, stained, etc. hire these guys."

Customers say: Quick response

"I honestly cannot say enough about Chris and Judy. They are just incredible to work with. Chris came out and took a look at my deck, gave me suggestions and recommendations which were just right on target. He took his time looking things over and pointed out things that I wasn't even aware of. He filled me in on the current situation with supplies which I wasn't aware of and came up with a solution that not only was spot on but ended up being even better than I think we both anticipated. When "game day" finally came around Chris, Judy, and crew were just great. They arrived each morning and told me what they were going to do that day and got to it. They were professional and courteous and just a joy to work with. The end result, I have a deck that honestly looks 10x better than it originally did. I would have no hesitation at all recommending them or hiring them again."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Local building codes don’t specify the number of steps a deck can have before a railing is required, mainly because stair height varies widely. Most areas require decks 30 inches or higher to have a railing. While not exact, that roughly equates to four to seven steps.

Most building codes require that railing spindles (also known as balusters) on decks or stairs be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard is often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' which means a sphere with a 4-inch diameter should not be able to pass through the opening between balusters. This rule is in place to prevent small children and pets from slipping through the railing. For the same reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck or floor surface should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is essential to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

Although composite decking is extremely durable, it’s also susceptible to extreme heat. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause fading, warping, and cracking. Composite also retains heat more than wood, which makes it dangerous to walk on in the summer. You can help prevent heat damage by only building with composite in shaded areas or using rugs to cover the hottest spots.

When installing deck boards, screws are generally a better option than nails. Screws offer superior holding strength over time, keeping the boards securely in place. In contrast, nails are more likely to pop out, which can create a tripping hazard. While you can use either, we recommend using 3-inch galvanized deck screws. To minimize the risk of cracking the wood, it's a good practice to drill small pilot holes before driving the screws into the deck joists.

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.
