"My landscapers told me Stump Grinding Services was the best business in the area for tree/bush removal and stump grinding. They were right. They arrived on time, cleaned up after they finished their work and did exactly what we asked of them, which was removing numerous overgrown bushes as well as a tree and several pre-existing tree stumps. Some companies just grind out the top of a stump but tell the homeowner they removed everything. This leaves the homeowner with a future sprouting, mess of roots all over their plant beds. "They removed a very large tree growing close to the house. The tree was taken down with no damage done to the house or the area around it. You can barely tell where their lawn friendly equipment ran. There wasn't even any sawdust on the ground when they were done cleaning up. We are very satisfied and will use them again. Not all leaning trees are dangerous, but they can be a hazard as gravity may eventually cause them to fall. A key factor is whether the lean is new or has been present for a long time. In some communities, however, there are ordinances protecting scenic views. Checking into your local laws can help you determine your rights in this situation.

Generally, you should prune around 20% of an apple tree’s growth—and never more than 30%. This means that if you have a severely overgrown tree, it can take a few seasons to prune it back enough to produce the healthiest fruit. 

If you’re dealing with a newly planted or juvenile tree, hold off on pruning beyond the initial shaping. Wait at least a couple of seasons into fruit production since pruning can increase the number of water sprouts and unproductive foliage.

Completely topping a plum tree is a risky business. Cut too much, and you’ll kill your tree. That said, you do need to trim the top of your tree to encourage bushy growth, maintain your tree’s vase shape, and limit size. 

A plum tree's central leader (or trunk) should never extend more than 3 feet above the highest branch. When you first plant your tree, cut the central leader so it’s 2 to 3 feet tall. As it grows, cut it back 12 to 20 inches until it reaches its desired height. Never prune more than one-third of the new growth.

If tree branches cross well into your property line, in many cases, these branches become part of your property, and you can trim them up until your neighbor’s property line. However, this issue will vary based on local ordinances, so you should do your research before making any decisions. Better yet, speak with your neighbor about how to handle any tree issues. 

If you don’t mind the branches, you can leave them be, but if they’re becoming a hazard, it’s definitely worth having a conversation.
