"Someone asked why we didn't use the company that installed our water softener...because their trip charge was $125 (to walk in the door) then $120/hour to repair. Peacock Water responded quickly to our Home Advisor request, they were polite, and did NOT charge an outrageous trip fee...actually NO trip fee. They repaired the problem and then returned in a week (at no fee) to test the water and make sure everything was working properly. Would definitely recommend."

"I own a rental property in Cleveland Ohio on 84th street. The house is a double, up and down. For 10 years after every heavy rain I got water in the basement. The water came from only two sides of the house, the side along the driveway and the back of the house. The property is rented out to section 8 tenants. This means that each unit is inspected once a year. For the last ten years I have been repainting the basement walls, bringing in dehumidifiers and blowers to dry the basement before each inspection so it would pass. Finally I called several waterproofing companies to give me an estimate on fixing the problem and eliminating the water. I liked what I heard from the folks at Buckeye Waterproofing. Their price was good and they really seemed to know what they were talking about. They were able to repair the problem from inside the basement and not have to destroy my driveway. They were neat, courteous and on time. It's been over a year since the work was done and the basement is still bone dry.

"Well, the first time the replacement was ordered it was the wrong one, which of course, delayed the installation a week. When it was finally installed I had to pay an additional $850 for code upgrades. This I was not informed of by Home Shield. Then we noticed that there was water on the garage floor and found that the pipe coming in from the wall was leaking at the wall so had to call the plumbing company back out to fix it. They first tried to say it was not their fault but since there wasn't a leak before they installed they did fix it. I have used Home Shield a few times before and never had a problem. Some of the companies they use are not the best so you have to research them before you commit. I have found HS service to be good if you do your homework. At the end of the day I was without hot water for almost 3 weeks but it was do to the plumbing company they sent out."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

To get utilities set up on a property, you first have to contact the local department of planning to determine whether your property is able to connect to public utilities. From there, you can work with a structural engineer and/or a building contractor to design the layout of utility lines on the property. The pros will need this information as they begin securing building permits before they can start adding lines.

If your property isn’t able to connect to public utilities, you’ll need to consider working with pros to develop a comfortable off-grid home that will meet your needs.

Most of the U.S. has hard water, especially across portions of the West and Midwest. The areas with the hardest water include parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Illinois, North and South Dakota, Ohio, and New York. You’ll find soft water in parts of New England, the Southeast, the Pacific Northwest, and Hawaii.

You can use a commercial water repellent treatment for glass on your shower doors to prevent water spots. Take care to only apply the product to glass. Letting air circulate also helps prevent water spots, as water is less likely to remain on the glass for a long time with good air circulation. Run your vent fan, open a window, and leave the shower door open for about half an hour after using the shower.

Softened water prevents scale deposits, reducing appliance wear, leading to energy savings and longer-lasting household fixtures.

Whether you need a license or permit for water softener installation depends on your location. Some municipalities require the installer to hold a plumbing license, while others may only require a permit and an inspection. In some cases, both a permit and a licensed installer are necessary, and some areas have no requirements at all. Often, only certified plumbers and electricians are allowed to pull the necessary permits. To find out the specific regulations in your area, you can contact your local building department. Alternatively, a local water softener installer or plumber will be familiar with the requirements and can typically pull the permits for you. Regardless of local laws, it is always recommended to hire a licensed professional to ensure the system is sized and installed correctly. You can use tools like Angi’s state licensing tool to verify an installer's license status.
