"I originally started with looking at concrete platform steps which needed footers that proved too expensive. The House Doctors provided me with alternate options using treated lumber and backfilling with gravel. I am very grateful to Seth and Mike for working with me to understand the challenges, come up with alternate solutions, and work within my budget. An excellent solution that ended up saving me $5000.00"

"We are very pleased with Jaime and the high quality of his work. We contacted him in August and made an appointment for an estimate. He arrived at the agreed time and he spent over an hour assessing our needs. For our deck work, he compiled all measurements and sketched the plan for the new steps paired with the modified layout. We initially thought we might need roofing shingle repairs but Jaime convinced us it was not needed. We scheduled Jaime to start on September 16, expecting the work to be done within 2 weeks. Jaime arrived promptly on the start date and was onsite every day until the work was completed, weather permitting. Jaime and his brother performed all work. Jaime brought all materials and tools to our house and cut all boards as needed onsite. All scrap was removed promptly. During the job activities, Jaime showed us other carpentry problems (rotting window frames and deck boards) which we had Jaime perform in addition to the original tasks. Jaime completed all work within the expected timeframe. Jaime is an extremely professional and skilled carpenter. We highly recommend him and won't hesitate to rehire him for future work."

"They stained my deck with a solid stain. They did an excellent job of taping-off and covering everything to insure that the stain did not end-up where was suppose to be. They cleaned-up after themselves. They were professional and quite. I under estimated the about of stain and coat that the deck needed, but they were great about it."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The most likely causes of a deck leaning to one side are damaged deck posts, soil erosion, and inadequate deck footings. If you’re not sure about the exact cause, the best option is to call a contractor who can build a deck to inspect the damage and recommend the best way forward.

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.

There are exceptions and specific considerations. If your property is on a slope, an inward swing might not be possible. For a deck gate, it's safest to have it swing away from any steps. In a backyard, the direction can be a matter of preference, though an inward swing can be helpful when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

Regardless of direction, ensure the gate can open fully without hitting any objects or blocking spaces. While an inward swing is standard, a gate that can swing both in and out offers the most flexibility if your setup allows for it.

Trex states that its Trex decking is an eco-friendly composite material made of 95% recycled or reclaimed materials (including plastic and wood), making it a sustainable brand of choice. According to the company, Trex is one of the largest plastic bag recyclers in the U.S., with each 500-square-foot Trex deck containing about 140,000 recycled plastic bags.

When installing deck boards, screws are generally a better option than nails. Screws offer superior holding strength over time, keeping the boards securely in place. In contrast, nails are more likely to pop out, which can create a tripping hazard. While you can use either, we recommend using 3-inch galvanized deck screws. To minimize the risk of cracking the wood, it's a good practice to drill small pilot holes before driving the screws into the deck joists.

How long it takes to install composite decking depends on the size of the decking material, the skills of the person installing the deck, the number of people helping, and how much prep work needs to be done before you can begin. Generally speaking, it takes anywhere from a few days to several weeks to build a composite deck.
