"I originally started with looking at concrete platform steps which needed footers that proved too expensive. The House Doctors provided me with alternate options using treated lumber and backfilling with gravel. I am very grateful to Seth and Mike for working with me to understand the challenges, come up with alternate solutions, and work within my budget. An excellent solution that ended up saving me $5000.00"

"He was on time, professional, and got Job done in great timing. He kept his word, and did everything he said he would. I had big a grease stain on my deck and he got it out. Then he gave it time to dry, the next day he came back and stained my deck. It’s absolutely beautiful. Thank you Kleer Kote."

"I ran into the garage and he repaired it. I liked that he was prompt. He did the job. He did a nice job. I mean it was a very small job. I wanted him to also. I asked him if he was a handy man. I wanted to know if he would do some floor tiling inside. He said no he doesn't do that. What he did was fine. I would not use him again because I don't live there anymore."

"The wallpaper removal and wall preparation took two days to complete. Ceiling, wall and wood trim painting took another three and a half days to complete. The craftsmanship of the painting crew was outstanding. They worked long days, were meticulous in their preparation and painting, and thorough in their clean up. It did help that we had just purchased the house and had no furniture to move, but by comparison to our experience with other painting crews at our previous residences, this crew was much more professional. More than a week has passed since this work was done. I am even more impressed by the quality of the work than when it was first finished. Jim Callahan’s initial estimate of job duration and estimated cost was accurate and reasonable. Jim is very experienced and was very helpful in providing advice on a number of issues of preventive maintenance needs for the house. In retrospect, I wish we had added a few more rooms to the work order, but we will use his services in future projects."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

Most building codes list a minimum width of 36 inches and a maximum height of 7¾ inches. However, for the most comfort and spaciousness, you’ll want to aim for a width of at least 48 inches and a height of 7 inches. Again, it’s always a good idea to base your numbers off steps that you already use comfortably.

Yes, snow should be removed from a deck to protect it from damage caused by moisture and heavy loads. Shovel the snow off of your deck regularly once it is more than four inches deep. Avoid using salt, which can damage your deck.

The overhang, or nosing, of deck steps is another area that will be covered in building code requirements. The noses on your deck steps should have a minimum overhang of ¾ inch. For safety, usability, and code compliance, the nosing of deck steps should not extend past 1¼ inches.

Composite decking requires a solid foundation or substructure for support. This base is typically a frame composed of posts, beams, joists, and footings. The frame can be built from various materials, such as composite, plastic, timber, or metal, depending on your budget, deck type, and environmental conditions. For maximum stability, a professional deck builder may recommend installing this frame on top of a solid concrete base. It is best to discuss the most suitable substructure design and materials for your specific project with a professional.
