"Super friendly and cooperative with scheduling, etc. Replacement of tile ceiling with drywall overall well done. Only negative is a few places in ceiling not quite flush, seen only when light goes up to ceiling. Overall would definitely recommend!"

"I hired Pelican Painters to do some touchup work in my house. The whole job from start to finish was done skillfully and professionally. Scott and Ben arrived on time and took time to assess my requirements, making suggestions on materials and techniques as I described the job. They did drywalling, calking and painting. I was very pleased with the end result. When I pointed out some minor damage to the shower floor, Scott didn?t hesitate to take responsibility and came back a couple of days later to fix it. I highly recommend Pelican Painters for cosmetic repair. They are competent, quick and personable. Scott strives to go 110% for his customers - and it shows! Definitely an A+ business."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

The average cost to apply a skip-trowel drywall texture to walls is $1.25 to $2.00 per square foot. Ceilings cost slightly more because of the increased difficulty of working overhead. Additional cost factors include any drywall repairs and removal of existing textures or wallpaper.

Knowing what causes drywall damage can help stop it before it starts. Here are some of the most common causes of drywall damage:

  • Water damage from roof leaks or leaky pipes.

  • Small holes caused by doorknobs, minor accidents, and rodent infestations.

  • Wall dents stemming from moving furniture and minor accidents.

  • Wall cracks that form from a settling foundation or seismic activity.

  • Nail pops from nails and screws in the walls.

  • Large holes that are caused by accidents with heavy objects, children and pets, or sporting equipment.

Drywall can get wet and dry out without sustaining permanent damage, but only if the water damage is minor. If you have a small leak and are quick to correct the issue and set up blower fans and dehumidifiers, your drywall should dry out. If the leak is persistent, the drywall becomes totally waterlogged, or mold begins forming on the drywall, you should remove and replace it.

Yes, it matters which side of drywall you use. One side is smooth, and the other is rough. The smooth side should be facing outward, toward the room, while the rough side should be hidden and facing the studs and framing of the house. The smooth side will be easier to apply tape, joint compound, and, later, paint to.

While a normal moisture level for drywall is between 5% and 12%, replacement is recommended if you get consistent readings above 17%. At this level, the drywall is likely too compromised by extensive moisture damage to be considered safe. You can replace either the entire sheet or just the affected section. If you are unsure after a visual inspection, it is best to have a contractor or water restoration provider use a professional moisture meter to get an accurate reading.
