"They quoted $525 to replace 13 boards on the back of the garage. He showed up and said he wanted an additional $200 because the correct wood was extra. I had him do the work and when I got home I found he only replaced 8 boards and two of the boards were cracked. I called them and he said he would do some caulking in the cracks. He said he would issue a credit to us and he would come out in a couple of days to see how the caulking worked and he never showed. I contacted the owner, Heather, by text and she was unwilling to work with us. She said they sent us a refund check and they had done all they could do to help us. She said they were not coming back out and that they were going to block our number. We have no invoice or bill and we are out about $700 because if this company"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

New builds, remodels, and additions often necessitate professional framing expertise.

No, beams are the primary load-bearers for flooring or roofing systems, and they distribute the weight of the structure to your foundational supports, while joists bear far less weight and distribute their loads to the beams. Beams are usually thicker and longer, and they have support posts or foundation walls beneath them for support.

The best way to know if your beams still provide adequate support is to consult a structural engineer. Structural beams can crack and even sag over time but may still be structurally sound. Keep an eye out for signs of issues in your home, such as sagging floors or ceilings, major cracks in your ceiling and walls, or signs of water damage around a weight-bearing wall.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

You can enclose an open carport, however, there are several things to consider before opting to do so. You'll want to check local building codes and permit requirements before proceeding to make sure it’s legal. While you can sometimes stick-frame a carport enclosure, pre-fab kits are also available. Remember that you'll likely need to meet concrete slab regulations and provide lighting inside the structure. Both of which could substantially drive up costs.
