Customers say: True professional

"Wow, where to begin, James was professional, accommodating and a pleasure to have in our home. He took great pains to have a clean, organized work area. He is very knowledgeable and takes great pride in his work .He steered us to company where we bought new cabinet doors and a few drawers that needed to be replaced, the price was very reasonable and made sense to reface instead of painting the doors. The paint job he did was absolutely remarkable. In addition to painting the cabinets he did a bit of carpentry on the back side of an island and did a beautiful job with that. We asked if he could paint the ceiling and yes he would , he also hung our new lighting fixtures. We were going into this project with minimal understanding of what needed to be done. James put us at ease from day one, he knows what he’s doing and can articulate that in a manner we understood. It was important that we hired someone who could do several things and James was that man. Outstanding workmanship and great person. Katie and Tony Springboro"

"I love taking on little DIY projects around the house, but honestly trying to wrap my own kitchen cabinets was a huge mistake. Since my family was coming over for the holidays, I was scrambling. A friend recommended Mercer, and honestly, he was a lifesaver. He came in, didn’t judge my botched attempt, and completely transformed the space. He even fixed a broken hinge and realigned a drawer that had been sticking forever without me asking. He explained everything, worked quickly, cleaned up better than any contractor I’ve ever hired, and was genuinely kind throughout. My kitchen looks brand new, and my mom even thought I remodeled. If you’re thinking about wrapping your cabinets, I would definitely recommend calling Mercer. Truly 5 stars."

Small jobs welcome

"I hate being condescended to. Listen to what I want and then give suggestions on how I might be able to work that out in my kitchen. Don't just tell me it can't be done. I felt like I was wasting my time. I asked about a particular type of closet (not realizing it was part of a bigger cabinet...how would I know) and she told me to follow her (using her finger to me like a child) and said I couldn't have it because it was as part of a bigger piece. She could have just said that. I said if I can't make my kitchen more "usable" (less wasted space), WHY to with custom cabinets. I could just reface. The woman behind me who was waiting to ask her a question said. Listen, if you can't get what you want, I don't blame you for not spending the money. It's easy to reface. So, I called another company and, low and behold, I'm getting partial refacing and partial custom cabinets. He came and we discussed HOW I could get my carousel cabinet (uh - he suggested I go from a double to a single sink - easy peasy) AND, he came in at half the price your website suggested I might pay. It is really nice to be listened to...especially when it's MY money I'm spending."

"From start to finish, very courteous and easy to work with. They explained everything along the way. Also, they made sure we got items put where we wanted and if it was more efficient a different way they explained why. Still giving us the option of what we wanted. Cleaned up after themselves! Thank you, Eric, Mark, Tim and Sebastian!! Highly recommend Improve It.ð  Â"

Kitchen Cabinet Refacing questions, answered by experts

Refinishing cabinets requires sanding and restoring them with paint, lacquer, or stain. Refacing cabinets involves removing and replacing existing cabinet doors and hardware. Refacing cabinets can be more costly. Refacing cabinets typically costs between $4,500 to $10,600

Yes, as long as the doors match the dimensions of your old cabinets and use compatible hinges. This method works best if you are using similar materials and door styles that match your existing cupboards. If you’re choosing significantly different materials, like moving from fiberboard to hardwood, then it’s usually best to replace the entire cabinet.

You can add glass to your existing kitchen cabinet doors with a few tools and some patience. We recommend following the DIY steps listed above, which include cutting a panel for the glass, cutting and adding the glass, and reattaching your cabinetry. If these steps seem too complicated or you’d rather have the peace of mind of a professional installation, hire a cabinet installation pro to handle this project for you.

You should not clean cabinets with vinegar. While many homeowners think it is a natural cleaner, vinegar is a mild acid, not a degreaser. Since it does not cut through greasy grime, it won't effectively remove it from kitchen cabinets. For best results, use a degreasing cleaner designed for prep work, then rinse and dry thoroughly before sanding.

Even the least DIY-savvy homeowner can replace cabinet hardware themselves. All you need is a drill, screwdriver, and a tape measure. However, always take the time to measure and fit carefully. Misalignment or dodgy drill holes can spoil the entire look of your cabinet makeover, and repairs or replacement cabinets can be costly.
