"I initially purchased a "Big Deal" for painting a few small exterior areas. Later that summer, following a city home inspection, I hired Kiss Coatings to paint the remainder of the house Kiss Coatings did a thorough job and were respectful when it came to communicating and cleaning up. However, they promised to return the following summer to do any necessary touch-up painting, which they did not do. I sent repeated messages to ask them to follow through on a couple of areas but I never received a response."

"Antonio did a wonderful job. We’ve worked with him on a couple of projects now. For this project, he stained and painted our previously oak steps. He is always great to work with; meticulous, hard working, great attention to detail, timely! They came beautiful and we would definitively recommend him and will be using him for future projects!"

"I was very pleased and impressed with the work done by George and his crew. They came in with one of the lowest bids on the project (repairing and painting the exterior of my home). As the work progressed, they pointed out several problems with the wood siding, gutters, downspouts, etc, and repaired them all as needed without changing or increasing their initial estimate. They consistently showed up on time or early and put in a full day's work despite the unseasonably hot weather. The quality of their work appears to be excellent. George also made several suggestions along the way regarding how he could make minor changes in the painting style (such as changing the color scheme of the entrance area) that would make major improvements in the appearance of my home. With only one exception, I took all his suggestions and am extremely happy with the results. George is obviously a talented and experienced professional, and I am very satisfied with the work he did for us."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

It's okay to walk on a newly painted deck after about four to six hours as long as the weather has been dry. Be sure to wait at least 24 hours before you place any outdoor furniture or grills on a freshly painted deck, though.

Whether to brush or roll stain on wood depends on the project and your preference. Brushing is ideal for smaller, intricate areas and offers more control over the application, ensuring thorough coverage and penetration into the wood's grain.

Conversely, rolling is efficient for more extensive, flat surfaces and can save time. However, it is not always the best fit for textured or uneven wood. Some projects may benefit from combining both methods, using a brush for detail work and a roller for broader areas. Ultimately, the choice between brushing and rolling depends on the specific requirements of your staining project.

To make sure the paint won’t bubble as you apply it, make sure to paint on a day that’s cooler than 85 degrees Fahrenheit. When the temperature is too high, the paint won’t dry evenly, which can result in bubbles forming on the surface. Another way to prevent paint from bubbling is to clean the walls, apply primer, and let everything dry completely before you begin.

Beyond liquid rubber, homeowners can use sealants, stains, membranes, or tapes as waterproofing options. Oil-based or water-based sealants soak into the wood, creating a moisture-resistant barrier. Waterproofing stains—available in transparent, semi-transparent, and solid colors—add both protection and style to your deck. For heavy-duty waterproofing, deck membranes and waterproof tapes can be applied under the deck boards to direct water away from the structure below. Whatever method you choose, clean and prep the deck first to ensure the best, longest-lasting results.

Applying a sealer or topcoat after staining wood is highly recommended, though not always strictly required. A sealer protects the wood from moisture, UV rays, and weather-related issues, which is especially important for outdoor surfaces like decks and fences. It also enhances the stain's durability, prevents fading over time, and gives the wood a cleaner, more professional-looking finish. For some indoor applications, a sealer may not be necessary, depending on the type of stain used and the level of protection needed. It's always best to check the stain manufacturer's recommendations and consider the wood's intended use and exposure when deciding whether to apply a sealer.
