"My husband and I could not be more impressed with the quality of work and craftsmanship that went in to our yard.  When we searched Angie's list for a landscaper Eagle Creek Landscape and Design was top on the list.  We contacted them and set up a meeting for someone to come over and quote us to re-landscape our front and back yard as well as put in a patio for us.  The owner of the company, Davey, came over and listened to what we wanted and gave us his opinion.  He seemed very professional and experienced and we loved his vision for the project so we went with him.  When they came over to do the job the employees were just as professional and courteous and did the whole project on time and just like we envisioned.  The patio looks great and we have used it every weekend since they finished it.  We love the look and feel of our new yard.  We are so pleased that we went with Eagle Creek Landscape and Design.  We have already recommended them to a friend and we are saving their number in case we would ever need anything else for our yard in the future.

"Brandon and his partner repaired our privacy vinyl fence and fence gate that for several years has been extremely hard to open. The vinyl fence had settled, over the years, and now had gaps where it should have been a tight privacy fence, and caused the gate to be very hard to open and close. Brandon did an excellent job removing the posts, re-cementing them into the ground, placing 4x4 wooden posts in the vinyl posts (that should have been placed when the fence was installed 9 years ago.) Our gate now opens without any difficulty, and the gaps are gone. I'm so glad we found Brandon, and look forward to calling on his company again for any future home repairs."

"I had them out earlier than the date listed because I thought the tree would fall on leach line for the septic system. When they came out the tree fell right on the line. There was a big impact on the ground and I was afraid it might break. I don't think that happened but they said they wouldn't put the tree there to begin with. They drove on my yard and left all types of ruts. They said they would come back and fix it and now they aren't answering my calls."

While many gate hinges are often made of extremely durable materials, such as galvanized steel, they can wear out after many years. How quickly they wear out also depends on how much use they’ve endured. It’s also possible for the hinge screws to fall out, which weakens the hinge. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

In most cases, you will need a permit to install a new driveway or property gate. An exception might be if you are simply replacing an existing gate. Before issuing a permit, your local municipality may require a site plan or survey to verify property lines and prevent encroachment on a neighbor's property. Permits for a gate typically cost under $100. Be aware that corner properties may have additional restrictions on gate height or style. It's wise to confirm permit requirements with your local building department or your gate installation company, which can usually handle the entire permitting process for you.

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.
