"I interviewed many companies. The bid from OSS was the most professional and I actually received a written contract specifying work to be done and products to be used prior to hiring them. Their bid was much more competitive than other painters especially in our Hyde Park area. Orlando, our job manager, was recommended by a realtor neighbor. My house is 5000 sq ft and 3 stories with a lot of trim work and overhanging eaves. They used high quality materials and did 2 coats on everything. They even were able to repair wood on my eaves. We had a sizable crew here every day and they were done within the 2 weeks estimated time frame. I highly recommend OSS Drywall and Painting! My 105 year old house looks brand new!"

"They did a great job! Advised us we needed to do additional work to stop water intrusion, or their work would not last. They came back to finish and everything looks great. Efficient. Friendly. Appreciated their honesty in advising us to make repairs before they did their work!"

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Through expert matching of texture and paint for an invisible repair.

Drywall can be toxic to the environment and to humans in some cases. As drywall breaks down in a landfill and comes in contact with other organic chemicals, it can create hydrogen sulfide gas or leach into the groundwater. Additionally, the CDC recommends methods for controlling the inhalation of drywall dust when handled. While the common ingredients of drywall—gypsum, silica, and mica—are naturally occurring, they can cause irritation in some humans.

Although they are used for similar tasks, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum and is primarily used for large-scale projects like taping and finishing seams on new drywall. Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it a thicker compound best suited for small wall repairs like filling nail holes or cracks, as it dries quickly and is easy to sand. For small repairs, either product can be suitable. However, you can use joint compound for small jobs in place of spackle, but you cannot use spackle for large-scale taping and mudding projects.

In many cases, installing new drywall will boost your home value. Replacing old, damaged, cracked, or wavy drywall is a great way to improve the look and feel of your home, as new drywall installed by a professional shouldn’t have any imperfections. Additionally, removing old drywall means you’ll have open walls, so you can install new insulation and address exposed issues with plumbing and electrical systems running behind the walls. All of these fixes will also add to your home’s value.

While a normal moisture level for drywall is between 5% and 12%, replacement is recommended if you get consistent readings above 17%. At this level, the drywall is likely too compromised by extensive moisture damage to be considered safe. You can replace either the entire sheet or just the affected section. If you are unsure after a visual inspection, it is best to have a contractor or water restoration provider use a professional moisture meter to get an accurate reading.
