"The Gutter Magician helped with getting insurance to cover as much of the repair work on the roof from wind damage and to the gutters as possible. They had a long hard battle with the insurance company, - which we are considering changing. The original contact person sent to give us the demonstration, Drake, was very pleasant, polite and knowledgeable. Believe me, we had many, many questions. He was patient and able to explain everything to us in an extremely understandable way. He didn't get upset when we needed more explaining, this was the first time we had to have a roof and gutters replaced. The owner was extremely helpful! We had the privilege to speak with him on a number of occasions. He always had a moment for me. He made sure his company delivered on their promises! The office person, Stephanie, was so very patient and kind throughout this insurance mess. Everyone was extremely helpful and patient, especially when we had questions. The installers were very pleasant and polite!! I needed to move somethings from my deck and with no hesitation they helped me move those items. Those installers must enjoy their jobs since everyone had a smile! They had everything installed and cleaned up in a very short time. Amazing work! The professionalism is TOP NOTCH! The ENTIRE staff is a delight to work with!! I personally felt like they treated me more like a family member and not just a customer."

Gutter Repair and Replacement questions, answered by experts

The average cost to install or replace gutters is around $2,000, with typical project costs ranging from $900 to $7,000. Most companies charge between $4 and $30 per linear foot. The total price depends on several factors, including the size of your home, the complexity of its footprint, the gutter material (e.g., vinyl, metal), and the gutter style (e.g., half-round, custom-built). Additional elements like downspouts, corners, and optional add-ons like gutter guards can also increase the price. The condition of your roof is another consideration, as new gutters cannot be installed on a rotting or sloping roof. While it can be an expensive upfront cost, new gutters are a worthwhile, long-lasting investment for protecting your home's exterior. You can save up to half on labor costs by installing them yourself.

The most common problem with gutters is clogging from debris like leaves, blossoms, and seeds from surrounding trees. This debris can block downspouts, leading to improper drainage and water overflow.

Other common issues include:

  • Leaks and holes, which can often be repaired with gutter sealant or caulk.

  • Rust, sagging, or detachment from the roofline.

  • Damage from strong storms.

  • Improperly pitched gutters that don't drain correctly.

Regular cleaning in the spring and fall is the best way to prevent most of these problems. You may need to clean them more often during periods of heavy leaf fall.

DIY is possible for minor leaks or realignments. Professional services handle complex issues like sagging or joint repairs.

Buried downspouts can freeze during cold weather as cold water runs through them. If you’ve discovered your downspouts are frozen, you can carefully pour hot water down the top of the downspout to defrost them. If that doesn’t work, you may need to dig your downspout back up. Avoid trying to break the ice from the exterior using a hammer as this can cause cracks and damage to your downspout.

To avoid freezing the future, consider adding a heating cable to the exterior, which can adjust heat based on the surrounding temperature.

How long hangers last will depend on what gutter material they’re made from, but generally you can expect to get at least 10 to 15 years from them no matter what they’re made from. But don’t wait for them to break to give them a checkup. Inspect this part of your gutters on a yearly basis, and make repairs at the first sight of damage.
