"Jamie promptly responded to our call for an estimate and came out to give the estimate a couple of days later. He was prompt to respond to any emails or calls we made. During our conversation regarding the estimate, we felt that he was honest and trustworthy. We didn't realize that the first person that had stained our porched sealed and stained over mold. At first, Jamie didn't think he would be able to get the mold off of the porch without an intensive process and gave us options for dealing with the situation. However, he kept trying and was able to get the mold off before he sealed and stained the porch. He made recommendations on stain type and color. Jamie and his helper came out one day to powerwash and returned a few days later to seal/stain the decks, which they finished in one day. The decks look great! We highly recommend A Brush of Class Painting and will definitely use their service again for our decks or any painting we need done. The breakdown of the cost below is $985 for the large deck and $360 for the small deck. It was definitely worth it for us."

"The handyman process went very well! Chris was able to identify the issue and was able to fix it whilst going the extra mile to make sure that it was done right. I would highly recommend this person for pretty much any home repair project you can think of!"

"My deck is stellar!! There aren't enough stars for Fence-N-Deck Doctors. My experience was perfect from the start. Jef the owner came out promptly for estimate. Quick, efficient, fair, professional. The construction started a day early and Bryan was expert--I mean super expert having built decks for over 20 years. The process involved questions and few minor changes (no skirting, 4ft steps, and partial privacy wall adjustment). All interactions with Bryan with questions were so positive and options given so that I would be happy with the end result. Bryan said this and meant it. Yes, it is stressful to make an investment but my friend had referred Fence-N-Deck Doctors and all indicators were these are solid, caring and skilled individuals that work as loyal friends and a team. Bryan was absolutely full of integrity. Everything about my deck being built was beyond my expectations. So hard to find this quality of work in these times. I can recommend Fence-N-Deck Doctors and assure you that you will be treated fairly. I acknowledge being incredibly picky and analytical but even with my high standards, if you are like me you will love the finished product and feel happy with the beauty and craftsmanship! I am not worthy of this beautiful deck made just for me. Thank you Jef, Michelle and Bryan!!"

"Don’t leave review too often but very pleased with CMC. Looking for large painting job throughout home. Tried multiple quotes. Couple with no response. CMC quick to respond and quote came in the lowest and included the paint. Scheduled us quick, showed up when they said they would. Paint job was excellent. On top of this, paint company mixed the wrong color and tint was very slightly off in our tall entryway and stairs. You could hardly tell and most wouldn’t notice but Mikes team came out and made it right. Brought all the ladders and equipment out again to repaint that room for us. Won’t use anyone else for paint going forward."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

For the longest-lasting exterior paint, consider acrylic or enamel (oil-based) paints. Acrylic paints, including acrylic latex and acrylic enamel, are known for withstanding harsh weather and sun exposure. Enamel-based paints are also one of the most durable options available. While latex paint is common, it typically has a shorter lifespan than acrylic or oil-based options. The paint's finish also affects its durability; a higher gloss finish is generally more durable. For resistance to moisture and cracking, matte and satin finishes can be effective, while a high-gloss acrylic or oil-based paint offers a combination of maximum longevity and durability.

Whether to brush or roll stain on wood depends on the project and your preference. Brushing is ideal for smaller, intricate areas and offers more control over the application, ensuring thorough coverage and penetration into the wood's grain.

Conversely, rolling is efficient for more extensive, flat surfaces and can save time. However, it is not always the best fit for textured or uneven wood. Some projects may benefit from combining both methods, using a brush for detail work and a roller for broader areas. Ultimately, the choice between brushing and rolling depends on the specific requirements of your staining project.

You’ll need to restrain your deck when you notice fading, cracking, peeling, or mold and mildew over a moderate to large area, or when it’s become especially difficult to clean. As for how often to stain a deck, plan to do it every two to three years or whenever you start to notice extended damage.

Staining a deck is typically less expensive upfront than painting. The cost to stain a deck professionally averages around $850, with most homeowners paying between $550 and $1,250, depending on the deck's size. A DIY staining project can cost less than $100. The cost to paint a deck ranges from $500 to $2,000. While the initial cost of staining is lower, it's important to consider long-term expenses. Paint can last up to 10 years, whereas stain needs to be reapplied every few years, which could lead to higher costs over time.

A wood deck requires annual cleaning and regular inspections for loose or broken boards, nails, and screws. It should be refinished by applying a stain or sealer every two to three years to protect the wood from water damage, rot, mildew, and sun fading. The exact frequency can depend on the climate and the deck's exposure to sun and moisture. If your deck is painted, it will need repainting approximately every 10 years. Signs that your deck needs refinishing include faded, splintering, or warping boards.
