"Called prior to arrival. Professional and friendly. Worked quickly and efficiently. Called to schedule an earlier appointment to get the job done sooner which I appreciated. Good job. I'm highly satisfied and will recommend them. 29 Sep UPDATE: Had a minor blemish on the chimney. Dan and crew came today to repair. They were done quickly and included the price of it in the earlier bill. Thanks Dan. Already scheduled them for a chimney cleaning for next year. Hired Hatton Brick & Chimney Masonry Services to sweep and inspect my chimney. He quoted a reasonable price, a lot better than several others. After inspection I decided that we would install a liner and new wood stove. I was already leaning this way since I've been told by several the fireplace was not built correctly. We had more smoke inside the house than out. Dan and crew came in and in one day installed a great looking wood stove insert, chimney liner and the price was excellent. Professional, cleaned up fixed several brick issues on chimney. Great job."

"They made my ugly duckling yard into a beautiful swan. They worked hard getting out rocks and dead plants. They came up with a beautiful arrangement of perennials. They did everything with excellence. They put concrete under the border wall. They broke up an old concrete patio and repoured it correctly with good stones and rebar. It all looks so beautiful and was done with integrity. They were very polite."

"Mike and his team completed a superb restoration of my badly deteriorated brick walkway. Their attention to details was simply awesome. Although the job turned out to be more involved, Mike worked hard to remain close to the original estimate. My neighbors witnessed the great job and attention to detail and have asked Mike to do some restoration they need. Mike and his team are true craftsman of restoration trade."

"From the moment I contacted Ed I felt as if it would be a good outcome, and I wasn t disappointed. We walked all around the house foundation-repair project and discussed possible fixes. I asked to see pictures of previous jobs, he presented the proposal, I mulled it over, and I received responses to my questions. I made the required deposit, he provided reasonable start and finish dates and kept me updated on the schedule. He rebuilt about 90% of my 100 year-old house foundation/retaining wall, and painted it along with the porch, stairs, window frames, threshold, etc. He placed vinyl railings and covered three columns. Did I mentioned that my house looks amazing? When COVID-19 hit, he kept me abreast of supply deadlines and consulted with me regarding material and proposal changes. He and his team put in a full days work each day unless the weather didn t cooperate. They cleaned up daily and left it looking better than when they started. I plan to hire him in the future for another project or two."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

No, it’s not recommended to attach shutters to brick without drilling. Brick is dense and built to last, so adhesives and shortcut methods don’t usually cut it. Even heavy-duty glue struggles to hold up over time—especially against wind, moisture, and temperature changes. Most no-drill options are made for materials like vinyl or wood, not solid masonry. Skipping the drill might seem easier, but it puts your shutters—and anything below them—at risk. For a secure, lasting install, drilling is the way to go. It takes more effort up front, but the result is safer and more reliable.

Yes, an outdoor fireplace should use fire bricks. Fire bricks are specially designed to withstand high levels of heat and thus won’t crack as easily as regular bricks when exposed to the intense heat inside a fireplace.

Fireclay is a type of clay but it is a type of clay that, because of its chemical composition, can be fired at a much higher temperature than other clays. This results in a denser and more heat-resistant final material. Because of the high percentage of a mineral called kaolin, fireclay sinks are smoother and more durable than other clay types.

On average, a well-built brick mailbox can last between 30 and 100 years. The insert that holds mail inside the mailbox may last 15 to 25 years before it needs to be replaced. If a mailbox needs to be fixed due to damage, make sure you know who to hire for brick repair.

Yes, but used or reclaimed bricks can be more brittle, cracked, or uneven than new bricks, so they’re harder to cut cleanly by hand. For that reason, you should take extra care when scoring and striking, and expect a higher chance of breakage. If a brick feels especially fragile, score deeper before attempting to split it.
