In general, PVC (polyvinyl chloride), PEX (polyethylene), and copper are the three piping materials used in new constructions when adding water supply lines. There are some caveats. PEX and copper are considered ideal when running lines that will handle hot water because they are not at risk for melting and warping the way that PVC piping can. At $0.40 to $4 per linear foot, PEX is considered more affordable than copper pipes, which cost $2 to $12 per linear foot. PVC is considered appropriate in water lines for cold taps only.

Pedestal sinks typically come with two pieces: the pedestal (also known as the base or pole) and the sink basin. You may hear it referred to as a standalone sink. The sink sits on top of the pedestal, which attaches to the floor and hides the plumbing. Both pieces usually come in porcelain or ceramic.

Pipes should be inspected regularly so you can catch any red flags early on. Common issues that you might run into with your pipes include clogs, damage like cracks and leaks, corrosion, or other signs of wear. When you stay on top of an inspection schedule, you'll avoid costly problems like burst pipes.

Watch for sinkholes in your yard. Also, if the water pressure in your sinks, showers, and other fixtures is notably lower, this is usually a sign that an underground water line is leaking. This affects sprinkler lines and can make the sprinklers shoot out water with very little water pressure, meaning they won’t water your lawn and garden as effectively as normal.
