"Our family is very happy with the completion of our privacy deck renovated by Ric Thompson and his crew. Our challenge was the high cost to entirely replace our old deck that was rotting away and required days of self-maintenance each year. Rather than a complete replacement, Ric suggested a restoration of the existing deck. This included new deck boards, replacing a few rotted joists, installing vinyl handrails and privacy lattice. The original steps were replaced entirely with a more comfortable pitch and a modern style. The project was topped off with decorative lighting and privacy panels; providing a room-like feel while enjoying the outdoors. The contractor was flexible with our construction dates and worked around the weather to complete on time and within budget. The worksite was cleaned daily and free of debris each evening. They hauled away the old lumber on the first day and took debris on the last day to the curb for garbage pick up the following morning. There was nothing left behind for us to contend with. We will be utilizing their annual "light detail services" in preparation for next season. It is nice to know we won't need to spend days preparing our own deck each spring. We highly recommend this company and give them 5-Stars."

"My microwave oven broke right before the Thanksgiving holiday. Help!!! I called By All Means And More and, as usual, they rescued me. They installed my new microwave very quickly. They came just a few days after I called them and put me into their schedule as an emergency. I have used these guys for all sorts of construction and fixes around the house. They are friendly, courteous, clean and always do what they promised to do. They clean up after themselves beautifully. Their list of references is a mile long. ?"

"I was fortunate to find them. I needed a fence up for my dogs before we arrived at our new home so my dogs would have a safe place to be right away. We had a bump in the road but they made it right."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Choosing whether your deck should be lighter or darker than your house is a matter of personal preference, as there is no right or wrong answer. However, considering the pros and cons of each can help guide your decision. Darker colors are often chosen because they show less dirt, footprints, and marks from daily wear, making them easier to keep clean. On the other hand, lighter deck colors tend to stay cooler in the summer. From a design perspective, using a deck color that contrasts with your home's exterior can help make the deck a more defined and distinct feature. Consulting color theory can also make the process of choosing a complementary house and deck color combination easier.

It is definitely worth sanding a deck to ensure the wood absorbs new stain. Sanding a deck removes the outer layers of aging wood, allowing the stain to penetrate. It also gives a fresh look to the entire surface as part of the deck refinishing process. Without sanding, your stain or sealant is less likely to absorb into the wood. While sanding a deck is a time-intensive project, the rewards are noticeable and long-lasting.

The best time to paint your deck is when temperatures are neither too cold (below 60 degrees) nor too hot (above 85 degrees). Always paint your deck when there’s no risk of rain. For fast-drying paint like acrylic or latex, ensure your deck can dry for at least four hours. Oil-based paints take longer to dry and may require 48 hours to completely cure.

A deck is typically attached to a house and accessed via the back door. Decks are usually constructed from wood or composite materials. A terrace, on the other hand, is a raised platform that can be attached to or detached from the house and is typically made from a hard-paved material, such as paving stones. Terraces can be built on the ground or on the roof of a home.

Yes, you can attach a deck to a mobile home, but it’s important that the work be done correctly to avoid the potential for major damage to your home. Many building codes require that any additions to mobile homes—including decks—be either freestanding or have their own support structures. Getting permits may require submitting the home's original floor plan, the proposed floor plan, framing details, and more.
