"I wanted straighter/level deck & edges of a 97 year old slate roof before removing the slate, replacing the deck, and replacing the slate with asphalt shingle. My thought was to prop low spots in the wavy front edge in front, and prop the sagging corners in back; then, to build triangular braces similar to one extant on the house, like many on houses of similar age and design in the neighborhood. The idea of propping the low spots was dismissed, discussed again, and eventually dismissed as unnecessary; the low spots were forced up by hand, and fascia boards attached. While I was told the weight of the new roof might drop the level of the low spots again, this may have been more than anticipated; in retrospect it may have been preferable to force the low spots higher than could be done by hand, as the discrepancies from linear in the edges of the roof have, I think, caused inability to properly interface the drip edges and guttering at many places. I would though hire Dave's again."

"I needed a custom vanity because the old bathroom vanity was a non standard size. So, he doesn't build custom cabinets but he alters any purchased, existing cabinetry to fit the space. I found a cabinet that I liked, and got a butcher block countertop. He stained and sealed the butcherblock, cut out the spot for the sink and attached the top to the vanity. My house was built in 1952. The walls are not plumb(?). He made sure that cabinet fit the space correctly. Communication was done through texting (perfect). I explained what I wanted and he came over and measured and told me exactly what I would need. If you want a good finished product that you'll love, employ Sharp carpentry. I'm very satisfied."

Cabinet Making questions, answered by experts

Yes. It’s common to have a combination of knobs and pulls for drawers and cabinets. There are usually a few different-sized cabinet doors or drawer fronts that look better with different scales of handles, or you might prefer one type of handle for a drawer front and a different one for a cabinet door. Be sure to choose handles of the same overall type when you mix and match and avoid using more than three types in one room to make sure everything flows together.

If you’re looking for shelving that will stand up to years of heavy stacking, plywood is the clear winner against MDF (a.k.a. medium-density fiberboard). Plywood is a sturdy material that resists sagging, warping, and splitting, making it the perfect fit for shelving in a variety of spaces. For sheds, garages, and other environments that aren’t climate-controlled, wood or plywood is a must, as moisture and humidity will cause MDF to warp over time. While MDF is the more wallet-friendly material, it should only be used for storing lighter items in a climate-controlled space.

Shaker cabinets are best defined by their square edges and recessed center panel, which is surrounded by two rails and two stiles. These cabinets can feature a full inset, a full overlay, or a partial overlay. While this cabinet design may have originated in the 1800s, the clean, crisp lines are ideal for modern styles, making them a popular option for all types of kitchens.

Moving a kitchen cabinet can be extremely tricky for DIYers, especially if it's attached to plumbing, electrical outlets, or walls. The project requires meticulous planning, the right tools, and some muscle, not to mention a friend or two to help. While experienced do-it-yourselfers can manage it, hiring a pro is often safer to avoid damaging cabinets, countertops, or surrounding fixtures.

Many cabinets use “J-pulls” or other handless designs. However, frequent use also gets these areas very dirty over time. A simple household cleaner and a soft washing cloth is usually enough to clean these areas when grime builds up. Adding a layer of lemon oil or beeswax can help prevent finishes from wearing off.
