Bernie Car, Owner of Organic Air Tree and Shrub Care: I've been in the horticultural field since 1994. I started out in chemical-based tree care. Today we have non-chemical approaches for treating and reversing plant stresses which are more effective than many conventional chemicals methods. Soil health and condition are vital players in overall plant health because they directly impact root health. Ultimately, most plant health problems begin in the root-zone, so that's where my diagnostic journey (and corrective action) usually leads. In other words, I don't just see an insect or fungal problem and go directly to chemical applications to try to correct the problem. Philosophically, I view many chemicals as "band-aids" that cover the symptom, without treating the root-cause (quite literally). Certainly, there's a time and place to use them, but they don't necessarily need to be the first option.\n\nIf this approach makes sense to you, I'd be happy to assist you in any way I can.
You can use herbicides to prevent roots from growing without killing the tree itself, however they must be used with caution. Systemic herbicides are absorbed by the root and can kill off problematic roots. However, herbicides can sometimes negatively impact nearby plants, so the solution is best used sparingly.
Sudden oak death and oak wilt are different diseases. Oak wilt first shows up in tree leaves while sudden oak death affects the branches and trunk. However, as symptoms in both can overlap, it’s best to consult a professional arborist tree expert for a proper diagnosis and development of a treatment plan.
There are many signs that a tree is diseased or dying, and if you suspect that’s the case, you should call an arborist immediately. You might notice rot or fungus on the trunk or that the tree is beginning to lean to one side. Brittle branches or signs of root damage are other indicators that a tree is in trouble. If the tree is dying, it might be time to cut the tree down so it doesn’t fall.
Some people prefer to leave or even carve a leftover stump, but we recommend removing it if possible. You can often dig out smaller trunks with a shovel once they have died and dried out. You can have stumps professionally removed, or request a service to grind them down to ground level so they can be replaced with other landscaping or objects.
While there is a lot of debate about whether boiling water is strong enough to kill tree roots, it is not best to remove the roots from large, old trees. You may be able to weaken young roots enough to remove them manually, but boiling water will likely not do the trick for large root systems.
