Customers say: True professional

"We have a large 13 ft long kitchen island that was installed by the original builder of the home. It was very cheaply made with ugly corbels and no appeal. We hired Tier One to replace the corbels and place wainscoting with a wood frame and corner trim. It turned out beautifully. You can not see any seams in any of the woodwork. Joe and Dave do very precise work and are very meticulous . The final product looks like a piece of furniture. It could not have turned out better! We are very pleased with their work."

"I needed to have kitchen drawers rebuilt. Zach did an amazing job in building me custom kitchen drawers. Efficient, timely, courteous, communicative, and cleaned up pretty good! I’ll definitely call him again for future work. Recommend."

"I have hired them three different times to install finishing woodwork trim in my home. They installed chair rails, crown molding, and added door surrounds for four door openings. Their work is quick, neat, and well priced. I would and will hire them again."

"Dave was very easy to work with. He was very prompt in replying once I sent out the request. He did a great job working with some large tiles that I picked out for a backsplash. He was very cognizant of keeping the areas clean. Very friendly and very hard-working. We really appreciated his services."

"Great Lakes Painting and Construction did an amazing job remodeling my entire living space, including two bedrooms, kitchen, living and dining areas, as well as closets. They repaired drywall damage that was a result of water damage and restoration, painted, and replaced the entire floor. They work carefully and thoroughly, and clean up so well after themselves each day that I could continue living in my space in the evening at the end of each of their workdays. They are responsive and curious, and above all have great integrity and professionalism. You cannot go wrong with Bob and his crew."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Wooden soffits, when properly cared for, can last between 10 and 25 years, depending on the type of wood and the climate you live in. Certain wood types will last longer than others, and you might want to consider the cost of replacing soffits when you break down the total project cost. While an initially higher-priced material might seem counterintuitive, it can make more financial sense if you don’t plan on moving.

On average, the cost to hire a carpenter ranges from about $75 to $100 per hour, depending on the type of carpentry, location, size of the job, and skill level of the carpenter. Get quotes from at least three carpenters in your area to determine the best price for your specific project.

If you don’t have a power saw with a blade where you can adjust the angle, you could use a miter box and hand saw to make the cuts. The miter box contains wide slots to support the piece of baseboard and other narrow slots to accommodate the blade of the hand saw. However, it’s tough to make non-standard cuts beyond 30 or 45 degrees when using a miter box.

Carpenters are trained to take on a wide range of home projects. You can hire a carpenter to do framing, roofing, build custom furniture, and make significant upgrades to your home. General carpenters are usually able to handle most jobs. However, you may also choose to hire a carpenter who specializes in a specific type of carpentry.

Yes, Corian® and other solid surface countertops can be cut with standard woodworking tools like a circular saw or a jigsaw, but using the correct blade is crucial for the best results.

The recommended blade is a tungsten carbide-tipped blade, often called a solid-surface planer or triple chip grind blade. This type of blade is hard enough to cut through the material effectively. For a jigsaw, a fine-tooth down-cutting blade should be used.

It is important to note that a diamond blade is not necessary. Diamond blades are designed for harder materials like natural stone, concrete, or brick, and Corian is not a natural stone.

Using blades designed for wood is not recommended as they can cause microfractures that weaken the countertop's edges. While a tungsten carbide blade provides a much cleaner cut, the resulting edge will still be rough and must be sanded and smoothed to prevent microfractures from developing over time.
