"They arrived on time, it took about 2.5 hours, there is at least 18 inches or more of insulation, and I cannot wait to see the difference in the temperature in the house! Next weekend will be to do blown in insulation in the walls! Many thanks to owner Mike DePasquale and Energy Consultant Kevin Sweeney!"

"I am very pleased with my new windows. I used Home Genius Exteriors to do my roof, gutter protection, and now Windows. This is an absolute amazing company, my salesman brendan was very helpful, Devan the Project Manager helped make sure everything went smoothly. Walter and Mike also from production were very friendly and professional. And Shawn, the window installer was polite, knowlagable, and efficient. And even cleaned up on his way out. Next on the agenda is to get a new door taken care of. Highly recommend HGE"

"We scheduled them for a particular week months in advance as the project was on a tight timeline. They could not start until after the demo upstairs and had to be done before HVAC installers showed up. Everything was completed on-time and the price paid was as quoted despite having to make a few changes to the plan once the walls were opened. Fantastic company. They want to do a good job and it shows. We were concerned about residual odors from spray foam but there are none. Most importantly the house retains heat with way less fuel burned! We heat primarily with wood and used to have temps drop >20 degrees from the moment we loaded up the stove before bed until waking. Seriously, the fire would burn for hours with the house at 75 degrees after we got in bed, but when we woke, it was 53 inside the house. Now with similar outside temps we don't bother to load up the stove before bed and we wake up it is maybe 8 degrees cooler. I love a morning in the mid-60s compared to the low-50s INSIDE my house in the winter. If you are going to retrofit your house with spray foam insulation, it is a huge and messy job, so be prepared for that. There are little bits of spray foam you have to clean up later, in the driveway, yard, house. You have to live somewhere else for at least 24 hours, but we stayed away almost a week while odors decreased. We had one issue where the AirKrete leaked through the inside of the house wall in 3 location and was not noticed by the crew. We came home to see the job they did and found globs of hardened foam hanging down the walls in these locations. I called Torsten and he reported this had not happened before, most houses don't have holes in walls on the inside, and had they seen it they would have cleaned it up. He came on site and helped me clean it up and apologized, which went a long way with me."

"We purchased the Angie's list deal of $250 for $600 of blown-in insulation. Sean was responsive and came to the house to check it out. We wanted to address a lot of cold air inflow was coming from an attic space on the 2nd floor of our home. They ended up adding some insulation and vapor barriers in the attic space, and we also paid another $200 to add some insulation in our basement where Sean thought there was a need. Overall very professional and helpful looking at lots of spaces across our house to opine on what would be most beneficial to us. We have noticed a big difference on the 2nd floor - it's a lot warmer up there."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

At a minimum, blown-in insulation lasts 20 to 30 years. Cellulose and sheep’s wool come from natural materials, so they likely max out at around 30 years. Fiberglass and rockwool feature artificial materials that boast lengthy lifespans, up to 50 years, or even longer in some cases. As always, this timeline assumes you don’t run into any issues, such as flooding or mold, that shorten the lifespan.

Whether you should remove old insulation before blowing in new insulation depends on your particular situation. Fiberglass insulation attracts insects and mold over time, so if it has been decades since your last insulation upgrade, consider removing the old materials before placing the new ones. However, most types resist mold, insects, and mildew, so once you get the go-ahead from your contractor that your space is free from all three, feel free to install the new insulation directly on top of the pre-existing materials.

The cost to rent an insulation vacuum ranges between $250 and $350 per day. The price will increase if you choose to rent for additional days, but you may get a discounted daily rate if you rent it for a whole week, which could cost up to $1,000. Once you've removed the insulation and are ready to replace it, the cost to rent a blown-in insulation machine ranges between $100 and $500.

Ductwork sweats due to a temperature difference between the air inside the ducts and the surrounding air, similar to how a cold drink develops condensation in the heat. This sweating is a sign that your HVAC system is not operating at peak efficiency. The best way to keep ductwork from sweating is to wrap it in proper insulation, which also improves your system's energy efficiency. Another option is to close off your crawl space and install a dehumidifier to dry the air and lower its dew point.

While fiberglass is dangerous to work with, it’s a perfectly safe material once it’s installed. If you’re tackling the installation yourself, make sure you take the proper safety precautions and wear the right gear to avoid skin and eye irritation and lung complications. Working with a professional insulation company can mitigate these risks.
